It is strictly regulated and usually lasts three years, although those who have their Abitur are often allowed to reduce this by one year. The trainees, so-called Auszubildende or Azubis for short, work in a company and become familiar with all the different areas of their future profession. They also have classes at a vocational college for two days a week, or in blocks of seminars. At the end of the training period they take their Gesellenprüfung. f etwa secondary school, a school that takes students through the last five years of their compulsory period of education* * *A Hauptschule caters for the last five years of the compulsory nine years at school in Germany. Students can then stay on for another year and, if their marks are good enough, obtain a qualifizierter Hauptschulabschluss, known colloquially as a Quali, which gives them a better chance in the job market and also entitles them to attend a Fachoberschule. In Austria a Hauptschule covers school years five to eight and also offers opportunities for young people who wish to go on to higher education.
