•• Об этом слове сказано уже столько – преподавателями, переводчиками, редакторами и т.п., – что добавить, кажется, уже нечего. И всего все равно не скажешь – сколько контекстов, столько и переводов. Но интересно, что, как и многие слова этого типа («с широким значением»), record не ощущается англичанами (американцами) как слово многозначное. В крайнем случае они видят в нем три-четыре четких значения. Как устному, так и письменному переводчику хочу дать два совета. Во-первых, прочитайте во всех доступных вам толковых словарях словарные статьи record, чтобы «проникнуться» основными значениями этого слова – это поможет в выборе контекстуальных вариантов. Во-вторых, старайтесь уходить от перебора русских существительных. Глагол или прилагательное помогут гораздо скорее (этот совет относится и к другим словам этого типа).
•• Простейший пример: Under previous governments, Tory and Labor alike, the record [of the British ministers] has mostly been poor (IHT). – ...английские министры проявили себя плохо (ничем не отличились);
•• Другой пример: All the principals in our latest scandal have spent a lot of time trying to improve the picture of themselves that’s in the record (Calvin Trillin). – Все главные действующие лица нашего последнего скандала потратили массу времени на то, чтобы подретушировать свой облик, основанный на известных фактах.
•• Можно привести множество примеров, и за исключением двух-трех специфических значений (рекорд, пластинка) в подавляющем большинстве случаев потребуется контекстуальный перевод.
•• Часто употребляется словосочетание track record. Оно, пожалуй, ближе к русскому послужной список, который любят некоторые переводчики. Но не всегда это словосочетание подходит. В некоторых случаях я бы рекомендовал поэкспериментировать со словами достижения, итоги, репутация. Но и здесь стоит попытаться «уйти от существительного».
