•• Давно уже «разоблачены» переводчики, не знающие, что English major – это не английский майор, а студент (американского университета), специализирующийся по английскому языку и литературе. Но ошибки в понимании этого слова продолжают встречаться. Поэтому, в который уже раз, краткая справка об американских университетах. В них нет того, что называется у нас факультетами (слово faculty означает профессорско-преподавательский состав, причем всего университета). Преподаватели группируются по departments – это нечто среднее между факультетом и кафедрой, а студенты выбирают себе специализацию (major) и соответствующий набор курсов, по которым надо набрать определенное число зачетов (credits). Таким образом, сначала преподаватель должен заинтересовать студента в своем курсе, зато потом студент должен доказать преподавателю, что он что-то знает. В последнее время либерализм в оценках становится редкостью – многие преподаватели просто «лютуют».
•• Еще одно значение слова major кстати, отмеченное в Новом БАРСе, – крупная, как правило, нефтяная компания: Richard Freeman, general director of oil major Texaco and chairman of the American Chamber of Commerce energy committee (Moscow Times).
