    1893-1987
       Debuta en el cine como especialista para Edison en los anos 10 del pasado siglo, antes de convertirse en ayudante de direccion de George Seitz y, despues, en realizador de seriales. En el ano 35 empieza a trabajar para Columbia, dirigiendo westerns, uno detras de otro, a un ritmo frenetico. Durante las decadas de los 40 y 50 se convierte en el gran especialista de Hollywood en seriales, para Republic y para Columbia, llegando a dirigir para esta el que historicamente se considera el ultimo de ellos, Blazing the Overland Trail, en 1956.        Especialista, actor, doble de las estrellas en escenas arriesgadas, director de escenas de accion, realizador, Yakima Canutt es uno de los nombres miticos en el western. Siempre sera dificil determinar hasta don de llega su responsabilidad en un rodaje, por lo que, mas que en ningun otro caso, establecer su filmografia como director es siempre una tarea aproximada. Procedente del mundo del rodeo, su hipotetica ca rrera como actor se quebro con la llegada del sonoro, ya que padecia una dolencia irreversible de las cuerdas vocales. Aparte de su trabajo en la mitica La diligencia (Stagecoach, John Ford, 1939), Canutt dirigio integramente la famosa se cuencia de la carrera de cuadrigas de Ben-Hur (William Wyler, 1959).

       Actor, guionista y director de origen canadiense, rueda mas de cien peliculas, entre mudas y sonoras. Una parte importante de su produccion, hasta un total de 33 titulos en diez anos, la constituyen peliculas del oeste de una hora de duracion, protagonizadas por algunos de los heroes del genero de los anos 30. Ninguna de ellas tiene la menor trascendencia en la historia del western. Hill tenia fama de acabar sus peliculas en el tiempo previsto y por debajo del presupuesto asignado.

       Neoyorquino, intento sin exito cursar carrera de Me dicina. Influencias familiares le procuraron trabajo en Universal como montador en 1931, aunque su primera acreditacion como tal es de 1937. Trabaja en Universal hasta 1948; entonces se pasa a la direccion, alternando cine de serie B y television. Es, basicamente, un director de genero, profesional correcto pero no especialmente distinguido. En el espacio dedicado a Frank McDonald se aclara lo re lativo al ultimo western de Landres, firmado por ambos.

       Fritz Lang es uno de los grandes nombres de la cultura cinematografica del siglo XX. Capaz de aunar ideologia, sensibilidad y espectaculo, desde sus primeras peliculas mudas muestra una insolita capaci dad para construir obras maestras, una detras de otra. En Alemania, su patria natal, y en los Estados Unidos, su patria de acogida, dirigio peliculas, algunas de ellas aparentemente banales, hasta construir una de las filmografias mas coherentes y atemporales que cabe imaginar. Filmes declaradamente antinazis, como Man Hunt (1941), Hangmen Also Die (1943), The Ministry of Fear (1944) y Cloak and Dagger (1946), ninguno de ellos, sospechosamente, estrenado comercialmentre en Espana en su momento; valientes y pesimistas peliculas acerca de la condicion humana, como Furia (Fury, 1936), Solo se vive una vez (You Only Live Once, 1937), Clash by Night (1952), o Los sobornados (The Big Heat, 1953); esplendidos espectaculos visuales como las dos partes de Die Spinnen (Der goldene See, 1919, y Das Brillantenschiff, 1920) o, sobre todo, el diptico formado por El tigre de Esnapur y La tumba india (Der Tiger von Eschnapur y Das indische Grabmal, respectivamente, 1959); la creacion magistral del diabolico Doctor Mabuse, que atraviesa, a lo largo, toda su carrera, en tres peliculas que son, si se quiere, algunas mas, ya que la primera (1922) la forman dos extensas partes, la segunda, ya sonora (1932), tiene dos versiones, una alemana y otra inglesa; la tercera, por fin, es la pelicula con la que el director cierra su filmografia, en 1960; obras excepcionales, singulares, dignas de profunda reflexion, como Las tres luces (Der mude Tod, 1921). Tambien, desde luego, tres westerns de encargo, capaces de superar sus limitaciones iniciales hasta constituirse en obras seneras del genero, en especial la ultima, magistral discurso acerca del bien, del mal y de sus efectos sobre el ser humano.

    1899-1964
       Nacido Samuel Neufeld, hermano de Sigmund Neufeld, futuro jefe de produccion de PRC, dirige cortometrajes desde 1926, y largometrajes desde 1933. Probablemente el mas prolifico realizador norteamericano de la era sonora, dirigio, sobre todo, westerns. Por sus manos paso una parte importante de los viejos heroes del genero, en peliculas de una hora de duracion y argumentos eternamente repetidos. Solo leer su filmografia produce cierto vertigo. Establecerla rigurosamente es una tarea ardua, especialmente en lo relativo al orden cronologico estricto, por lo que en esta ocasion mas que en ninguna otra hay que entender que ese orden es susceptible de correccion. Utiliza los seudonimos de Peter Stewart y Sherman Scott. Se ha prescindido de tres aparentes largometrajes, situados al final de su carrera y obtenidos, cada uno de ellos, por super posicion de dos episodios del serial televisivo “Hawkeye and the Last of the Mohicans”. Aunque el nivel medio de los filmes de Sam Newfeld es realmente bajo, hay que citar dos curiosidades: Harlem on the Prairie (1937) esta interpretado integramente por negros, y The Terror of Tiny Town (1938), por enanos, que se mueven en decorados de tamano normal.
