La pax romana comienza en el 19 a.C. con el fin de las guerras civiles y dura hasta la muerte de Marco Aurelio en el 180 d.C.◘ El concepto de Pax Romana fue acuñado por el historiador latino Linio el Joven (61-114 d.C.) en su panegírico a Trajano. Se refiere a la situación de paz que reinó durante dos siglos dentro de las fronteras del Imperio Romano. En la práctica más que una realidad fue un ideal de Octavio Augusto y los emperadores que lo sucedieron, pues hubo siempre insurrecciones de los pueblos sometidos. El concepto pasó a la historia con el significado de situación pacífica fruto de una sumisión impuesta a la fuerza. Hoy, jurídicamente hablando, se utiliza el concepto para definir cualquier acuerdo o consenso alcanzado tras largas negociaciones y con mucha dificultad.
