34 Hill, George Roy
1921-2002Nacido en Minneapolis, Minnesota, George Roy Hill curso estudios musicales en la Universidad de Yale, en la que se graduo en 1943. Fue piloto en la Se gunda Guerra Mundial y en la Guerra de Corea. En el mundo del audiovisual entra por la puerta de la television, me dio para el que dirige diversos episodios de series desde 1956. En 1962 debuta en el cine, pero obtiene su primer verdadero triunfo en 1969 con el que sera su unico western, Dos hombres y un destino, uno de los hitos de la decada. En los oidos de todos los espectadores resuenan todavia los ecos del exito de la tramposa The Sting (El golpe, 1973), el mas clamoroso que jamas alcanzo George Roy Hill, aunque el de Dos hombres y un destino casi se le puede comparar. Sin duda, en ambos casos influyo la singular quimica desprendida por la pareja protagonista, formada por Paul New man y Robert Red ford. Realizador brillante, de esos que aparentan mas de lo que son, no cabe duda de que su vision romantica del salvaje oeste supuso una revitalizacion del mismo, aunque a esta se le pueda achacar cierta superficialidad.Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid (Dos hombres y un destino). 1969. 110 minutos. 35 Ince, Ralph
1887-1937Ralph es el mas joven de los tres hermanos Ince. Fue actor infantil sobre el escenario y dibujante en la productora Vitagraph. Actor de cine y director desde comienzos de la segunda decada del siglo XX, su carrera en la Meca del cine se extiende hasta 1934 en que marcha a Inglaterra, donde muere en 1937 en un accidente de trafico. Su hermano Thomas H. Ince es uno de los realizadores emblematicos del western mudo. Su otro hermano, John Ince, fue tambien actor y director, aunque este no llego a dirigir peliculas sonoras. El William Boyd que figura como interprete del unico western sonoro de Ralph Ince no es el celeberrimo William Boyd que dio vida a Hopalong Cassidy.Men of America. 1933. 58 minutos. Blanco y Negro. Nacido en Filadelfia, la separacion de sus padres le llevo a pasar las primeras etapas de su vida en compania de su madre y de su hermano Irving, que con el tiempo seria un reputado fotografo. Despues de la Segunda Guerra Mundial, intenta la aventura teatral en la compania de Joshua Logan. Toma la decision de adquirir una formacion rigurosa, lo que le hace interrumpir su actividad teatral y estudiar en el Black Mountain College, en Carolina del Norte, y, mas tarde, en las universidades de Perugia y Florencia. En 1948 pasa por el Actor’s Studio hasta que consigue introducirse en la cadena de television NBC, en trabajos subalternos. Pronto escribe guiones y dirige. Obtiene un gran exito en 1956 con la obra The Miracle Worker, que para el sera una especie de talisman, ya que volvio a dirigirla en Broadway en 1959 y en cine en 1962.Abiertas las puertas de este medio, dirige su primera pelicula, que sera tambien su primer western, El zurdo, que dio a conocer a un director que tenia mucho que decir en la pantalla grande. El Milagro de Ana Sullivan (The Miracle Worker, 1962), La jauria humana (The Chase, 1966) y Bonnie and Clyde (1967) certificaron el valor intrinseco del cineasta, que logro nuevos parabienes con su segundo e iconoclasta western, Pequeno gran hombre. A mi juicio, Arthur Penn es autor de una obra coherente, de notable valor aunque con algunos altibajos. Hoy, sin embargo, parece algo olvidado, por lo que parece oportuno resenar que sus peliculas, y en particular sus tres westerns, forman parte de lo mas granado de la produccion norteamericana “postclasica”, esa que empieza a abrirse camino desde los ultimos anos 50.The Left Handed Gun (El zurdo). 1958. 102 minutos. 1913-1978Canadiense de Montreal, se instala desde joven en los Estados Unidos, estudiando en la Universidad de California, Los Angeles. Empieza trabajando para Fox y, ya como montador, para RKO. Como tal, colabora en las dos primeras peliculas de Orson Welles y, algo despues, lo encontramos en el equipo del productor Val Lewton, que le dio la primera ocasion de dirigir con The Seventh Victim (1943). Muere en 1978 de un ataque al corazon durante el rodaje de la que seria su ultima pelicula, El tren de los espias (Ava lanche Express). Su carrera, irregular, ha suscitado criticas virulentas, pero cuenta con no pocas interesantes peliculas. Para muestra, este notable western.Roughshod. 1949. 88 minutos. Blanco y Negro. RKO.
