33 Fado
Traditional urban song and music sung by a man or woman, to the accompaniment of two stringed instruments. The Portuguese word, fado, derives from the Latin word for fate ( fatum), and the fado's usage does not distinguish the sex of the singer. Traditionally, wherever the fado is performed, the singer, the fadista—who is often but not always a woman wearing a shawl around her shoulders—is accompanied by the Portuguese guitarra, a 12-stringed mandolin-like instrument or lute, and the viola, a Spanish guitar. There are at least two contemporary variations of the fado: the Lisbon fado and the Coimbra or university student fado. While some authorities describe the song as typical of the urban working classes, its popularity and roots are wider than only this group and it appears that, although the song's historic origins are urban and working class, its current popularity is more universal. The historic origins of the fado are not only obscure but hotly debated among scholars and would-be experts. Some suggest that its origins are Brazilian and African, while others detect a Muslim, North African element mixed with Hispanic. After the Revolution of 25 April 1974, there was talk that the fado's days were numbered as a popular song because it seemed an obsolete, regime-encouraged entertainment, which, like a drug or soporific, encouraged passivity. In the new Portugal, however, the fado is still popular among various classes, as well as among an increasingly large number of visitors and tourists. The fado is performed in restaurants, cafes, and special fado houses, not only in Portugal and other Lusophone countries like Brazil, but wherever Portuguese communities gather abroad. Although there do not appear to be schools of fado, fadistas learn their trade by apprenticeship to senior performers, both men and women. In fado history, Portugal's most celebrated fadista was Amália Rodrigues, who died in 1999. She made her premier American debut in New York's Carnegie Hall in the 1950s, at about the same time Americans were charmed by a popular song of the day, April in Portugal, an American version of a traditional Portuguese fado called Fado de Coimbra, about Coimbra University's romantic traditions. The most celebrated fadista of the first decade of the 21st century is Marisa dos Reis Nunes, with the stage name of Mariza, who embodies a new generation of singers' contemporary interpretation of fado. The predominant tone of the Lisbon variation of the fado, sung often in the areas of Alfama, Mouraria, Bairro Alto, and Alcântara, is that of nostalgia and saudade — sadness and regret. Traditionally, the Coimbra version has a lighter, less somber tone. -

35 ἄητος
Grammatical information: adj.Origin: PG [a word of Pre-Greek origin]X [probably]Etymology: Cf. H. ἄητοι ἀκόρεστοι, ἄπληστοι; ἀήτους μεγάλας. Αἰσχύλος ᾽Αθάμαντι. Hdn. Gr. 1,220 ἄητος ὁ ἀκατάπαυστος. The first explanation connects the word with ἄμεναι, ἆσαι; it would then differ from ἄατος, ἆτος through the long vowel (which is not probable). Perhaps the same word as αἴητος ( πέλωρ αἴητον Σ 410 said of Hephaistos). If so, the variation α\/αι might point to a substr. word (metrical lengthening is improbable, α \< αι impossible); FUR 253 (but his connection with ἀήσυλος is quite uncertain). Palmer, Interpretation 339 connects the word said of Hephaistos with Myc. ajameno as `artist'; improbable. Not to ἄημι, LfgrE. S. Bechtel Dial. 1, 414).Etymology: The above paradigm, together with the nominal formations built on a general μνᾱ-, is a purely Greek creation. The basis of the generalized system were of course one or a few verbal forms; as however the new system was already complete at the beginneing of Greek and the cognate languages present nothing that could be compared directly with the Greek forms, we can no more follow its creation. A monosyllabic IE * mnā- is found in class. Sanskrit, as in aor. a-mnā-siṣ-uḥ `they mentioned', which typologically reminds of μνῆ-σ-αι, in the perf. act. ma-mnau (gramm.), prob. innovation to midd. ma-mn-e (cf. μέμονα) and not (with Brugmann Grundr.2 II: 3,441) to be connected with μέμνημαι; further in - mnā-ta- `mentioned' and mnā-ya-te `is mentioned', with which agree on the one hand Ἄ-μνᾱ-τος and - with secondary σ (Schwyzer 503) - μνη-σ-τή, on the other hand μνάομαι. But the last is undoubtedly analogically innovated after wellknown patterns to μνήσασθαι etc.; also the verbal adj. does not look archaic. The development of μιμνήσκω has been prob. about the same as with κικλήσκω (where however καλέ-σαι was retained) or with βιβρώσκω (s.v.), where also non-Greek agreements to βρω- are rare or doubtful. The general re-creation isolated μιμνήσκω both formally and semantically from the old μέμονα and even more from μαίνομαι. -- From μνάομαι `remind, mention' developed as courteous expression the meaning `woo a woman, court'; s. Benveniste Sprachgesch. u. Wortbed. 13 ff., where also against the connection with γυνή (Schwyzer 726 n. 1). Against Benveniste Ambrosini Rend. Acc. As 2. member - ποιός in unlimited productive syntheta, e.g. λογοποιός m. `historian, fabulist, newsmonger' (IA.) with λογοποι-έω, - ία, - ικός, - ημα.Derivatives: 1. ποίημα ( προσ-, περι-) n. `production, work, poem' (IA.) with - ημάτιον (Plu.), - ηματικός `poetic' (Plu.); 2. ποίησις ( προσ-, περι-, ἐκ- a.o.) f. `creation, production, poetry' (IA.); on the meaning of ποί-ημα, - ησις Ardizzoni Riv. fil. class. 90, 225 ff.. Chantraine Form. 287. 3. ποιητός ( προσ-, ἐκ- etc.) `made, produced' (Il.), also `made artificially, not naturally' = `adopted' (Pl., Arist.); Ammann Μνήμης χάριν 1, 19 f. 4. ποιητής m. El. [πο]ιϜέοι (beside repeated ποιέοι). Acc. to usual interpretation (lit. in Bq and WP. 1, 510) ποιϜέω is derived from a noun *ποιϜός, which would be found in ἀρτο-ποιός a.o. An independent noun *ποιϜός cannot however be deduced from the 2. member, as the relevant adjectives seems recent and may have been derived from the verbal expressions ( τοξοφόρ-ος: τόξον φέρειν, λογογράφ-ος: λόγον γράφειν etc.). One might think that in the simplex we have a compound of - ποιέω that was made independent (Schwyzer 726 n. 7). -- The general meaning `make, create' may have arisen from the most different concrete special meanings. Nothing forbids to connect a verbal noun *ποι-Ϝός with u̯o-suffix (Schwyzer 472) with a verb `heap, accumulate, fit together', which is preserved in Indo-Iran., e.g. Skt. cinóti, and also has representatives in Slav., e.g. OCS činъ ' τάξις' with činiti `order, form'; IE kʷei- (WP. 1, 509f., Pok. 637f.). It is however obvious to combine, the u̯-element in *ποιϜός with the u̯-element in cinóti: so ποιϜέω from *kʷoi̯-u̯-éi̯ō beside cinóti from *kʷi-n-éu̯-ti approx. as Goth. straujan 'strew' from *strou̯-éi̯ō beside Skt. str̥ṇóti `strew' from *str̥-n-éu̯-ti (s. στόρνυμι) or Goth. - walwjan `revolve' beside Skt. vr̥ṇóti `envelop' and εἰλύω `id.' (*u̯ol-u-éi̯ō: *u̯l-n-éu̯-ti). In such an analysis ποιέω would appear like Goth. straujan, walwjan as an iterative deverbative and one would be liberated from the not quite reliable noun *ποιϜός. Of course the syntheta in - ποιός can then be connected with a primares verb (δρῠ-τόμ-ος: δόρυ τάμνειν). -- On the meaning of ποιέω and other verba faciendi cf. Braun Stud. itfllcl. N. S. 15, 243 ff.; also Valesio Quaderni dell'Istituto di Glottologia (Bologna) 5 (1960) 97 ff. Cf. also the lit. on δράω and πράσσω. Older lit. in Bq.Page in Frisk: 2,570-572Greek-English etymological dictionary (Ελληνικά-Αγγλικά ετυμολογική λεξικό) > ποιέω
