Система телевидения, принцип действия которой основан на передаче изображения от коллективной приемной антенны по кабельной сети. К телевизору подсоединяется специальная приставка-декодер [subscriber's set], с помощью которой абонент может смотреть каналы КТВ. Первые системы появились в 1949 в горных районах штатов Орегон и Пенсильвания как средство повышения помехоустойчивости и вскоре распространились в сельской местности, где заключались франшизы [ franchise] с местными органами власти. Закон о кабельном телевидении 1984 [Cable Act of 1984] чрезвычайно усложнил аннулирование муниципальных франшиз. Сегодня большинство кабельных компаний на местах не имеют конкурентов и действуют как монополии. Пик популярности КТВ приходится на 80-е гг., когда абоненты составили более половины всех семей, имеющих телевизоры. Развитие КТВ привело к появлению платного телевидения [ pay television], а также распространению отдельных платных программ [pay-per-view (PPG)]. Использование спутников для передачи телесигнала увеличило число кабельных каналов. Успех КТВ трансформировал телеиндустрию, до этого находившуюся в руках нескольких телекомпаний, поскольку кабельное телевидение предоставило зрителю возможность широкого выбора программ (в том числе специализированных каналов) без рекламы, высокое качество изображения и удовлетворило запросы всех социальных и возрастных групп населения разных регионов.
