В Великобритании деятельность коммерческих банков осуществляется на основе сетевой системы (см. Branch banking), которая охватывает весь внутренний рынок страны. Крупнейшими коммерческими банками являются Барклайз и Нэтвест. Они постоянно расширяют свою деятельность, предоставляя стандартные, а также дополнительные финансовые услуги - ипотечное кредитование, страхование, инвестирование и операции с ценными бумагами. Они имеют также отделения за рубежом. Коммерческий банк ставит перед собой две основные цели: обеспечить возможность выдачи клиентам денег со счетов по первому требованию и инвестировать накопленные средства с целью получения прибыли.
