esp. of the celebrated grammarian, author of the Rig-veda Prātiṡākhya, the Bṛihad-devatā, andᅠ various other wks.;
he is described as the teacher of Kātyāyana andᅠ especially of Āsvalāyana;
he is said to have united the Bāshkala andᅠ Ṡākala Ṡākhās, andᅠ is sometimes identified with the Vedic Ṛishi Gṛitsa-mada;
but according to the Vishṇu-Purāṇa, Ṡākhās was a son of Gṛitsamada, andᅠ originated the system of four castes;
he is quoted in ĀṡvṠr. APrāt. and VPrāt. ;
the various legends about him are very confused) ṠBr. Up. MBh. etc.;
