65 American English
•• American English / British English
Reader’s Digest Success With Words: Oscar Wilde’s Description of Britain and America as “two great nations divided by a common language” contains truth as well as wit They have never had much trouble understanding each other, but they have a long history of being irritated with each other. The words and accent are disgusting, and there can be no doubt that such films are an evil influence on our language. The reasons for American English being different than English English are simple: As an independent nation, our honor requires us to have a system of our own, in language as well as government. – ... The King’s English is not the King’s. It is a joint stock company, and Americans own most of the shares.
статью foreign words and phrases).
•• В английской парламентской практике to table a proposal – то же, что submit т.е.
Time: White has rebounded and is now believed to be running neck and neck with his rival. Financial Times: Yesterday John Hume, the Northern Irish nationalist leader, decided after weeks of prevarication not to stand.
•• administration брит. government. В США слово government (см. статью government, governance) относят ко всем ветвям власти, к государству вообще, в Великобритании, как у нас, к правительству в смысле кабинета министров;
•• apartment брит. flat. В США слово flat тоже встречается, но обычно употребляется в отношении плохих, дешевых квартир;
•• bill брит. note (в значении банкнота);
•• check брит. bill. Имеется в виду чек, который приносит клиенту официант в ресторане;
•• closet брит. cupboard. В США встроенный шкаф называется built-in closet, а walk-in closet – это кладовка, темная комната для одежды. Правда, слово closet, употребляемое как прилагательное в значении тайный, скрывающий свое истинное лицо, распространено и в США, и в Англии (closet liberal, closet homosexual);
•• drunk driving (встречается также drinking and driving) брит. drink driving. Совершенно непонятно, почему в двух «братских странах» существует это небольшое, но существенное различие в обозначении этого «кое-где у них порой» встречающегося явления. Не берусь судить, кто прав, тем более что я не автомобилист (кстати, по обе стороны океана автомобилист чаще всего – motorist). Англичане говорят также drink drivers: Government advertisements are aimed at putting off drink drivers (Skynews). – Государство проводит в СМИ кампанию с целью убедить водителей не садиться за руль в нетрезвом состоянии. В США имеется The National Commission Against Drunk Driving, а само это явление обозначается часто сокращениями DUI (Driving under the influence) или DWI (Driving while intoxicated): DWI is a serious offense in New Jersey. Сокращение может употребляться как существительное: Being arrested for a DUI can be an unnerving experience (сайт www.bktlaw.com). – Арест за управление автомобилем в нетрезвом состоянии/состоянии опьянения может превратиться для вас в большую нервотрепку. (Кстати, юристы отмечают, что drunk driving, DUI и DWI не являются строгими юридическими терминами. Точнее – impaired driving, т.е. управление автомобилем при содержании алкоголя в крови (blood alcohol concentration – BAC) от 0,08 процента.) В соответствующей русской терминологии тоже часто используются сокращения: управление т/с (транспортным средством) в НС (нетрезвом состоянии);
•• garbage брит. rubbish;
•• garbage can брит. dustbin. Соответственно, американский garbage man – это английский dustman. Кстати, у англичан есть выражение dustbin of history (свалка истории), что «по-американски» звучит иначе – ash heap of history;
•• gas, gasoline брит. petrol. Во избежание путаницы американцы называют газ natural gas;
•• in брит. of. Переводчику на английский язык надо иметь в виду, что у американцев и англичан сохраняются «принципиальные разногласия» по поводу некоторых предлогов. Наверное, самое заметное из них: американцы говорят participants in a conference, англичане – participants of a conference;
•• installment plan брит. hire purchase (покупка в кредит);
•• license plate брит. number plate. По-русски номерной знак или просто номер (на автомобиле);
•• liquor store брит. off-license. Винно-водочный магазин. Несколько странное английское название означает, что магазин имеет лицензию продавать спиртное (амер. liquor, брит. [ wines and] spirits) «на вынос» – to be consumed off the premises;
•• mail брит. post. Но почтовое отделение в обеих странах называется post office;
•• nervy – в американском словоупотреблении имеет значение наглый (someone who has a lot of nerve). Англичанин скорее всего скажет impudent;
•• orchestra seats (в театре) брит. stalls;
•• pants брит. trousers. У англичан pants – трусы (амер. underpants или shorts);
•• pantyhose брит. tights;
•• parka брит. anorak;
•• recess брит. break. Значение этого слова – перерыв. Американцы говорят break о кратком перерыве (coffee break; we’ll take a short break for a commercial announcement) и о каникулах в школах и университетах (spring break). В остальных случаях – recess (в школе; ударение на первом слоге), intermission (на концерте) или даже interruption;
•• station wagon брит. estate car. «Волгу» такого типа у нас в свое время называли «волга-сарай». Вместо этого устаревшего и чисто разговорного «термина» сейчас предлагается «универсал»;
•• subway брит. underground;
•• teller (в банке) брит. cashier;
•• truck брит. lorry;
Where is the toilet/lavatory? Where is the bathroom/restroom/men’s room/ladies’ room. – comfort stations.

66 British English
•• administration брит. government. В США слово government (см. статью government, governance) относят ко всем ветвям власти, к государству вообще, в Великобритании, как у нас, к правительству в смысле кабинета министров;
•• apartment брит. flat. В США слово flat тоже встречается, но обычно употребляется в отношении плохих, дешевых квартир;
•• bill брит. note (в значении банкнота);
•• check брит. bill. Имеется в виду чек, который приносит клиенту официант в ресторане;
•• closet брит. cupboard. В США встроенный шкаф называется built-in closet, а walk-in closet – это кладовка, темная комната для одежды. Правда, слово closet, употребляемое как прилагательное в значении тайный, скрывающий свое истинное лицо, распространено и в США, и в Англии (closet liberal, closet homosexual);
•• drunk driving (встречается также drinking and driving) брит. drink driving. Совершенно непонятно, почему в двух «братских странах» существует это небольшое, но существенное различие в обозначении этого «кое-где у них порой» встречающегося явления. Не берусь судить, кто прав, тем более что я не автомобилист (кстати, по обе стороны океана автомобилист чаще всего – motorist). Англичане говорят также drink drivers: Government advertisements are aimed at putting off drink drivers (Skynews). – Государство проводит в СМИ кампанию с целью убедить водителей не садиться за руль в нетрезвом состоянии. В США имеется The National Commission Against Drunk Driving, а само это явление обозначается часто сокращениями DUI (Driving under the influence) или DWI (Driving while intoxicated): DWI is a serious offense in New Jersey. Сокращение может употребляться как существительное: Being arrested for a DUI can be an unnerving experience (сайт www.bktlaw.com). – Арест за управление автомобилем в нетрезвом состоянии/состоянии опьянения может превратиться для вас в большую нервотрепку. (Кстати, юристы отмечают, что drunk driving, DUI и DWI не являются строгими юридическими терминами. Точнее – impaired driving, т.е. управление автомобилем при содержании алкоголя в крови (blood alcohol concentration – BAC) от 0,08 процента.) В соответствующей русской терминологии тоже часто используются сокращения: управление т/с (транспортным средством) в НС (нетрезвом состоянии);
•• garbage брит. rubbish;
•• garbage can брит. dustbin. Соответственно, американский garbage man – это английский dustman. Кстати, у англичан есть выражение dustbin of history (свалка истории), что «по-американски» звучит иначе – ash heap of history;
•• gas, gasoline брит. petrol. Во избежание путаницы американцы называют газ natural gas;
•• in брит. of. Переводчику на английский язык надо иметь в виду, что у американцев и англичан сохраняются «принципиальные разногласия» по поводу некоторых предлогов. Наверное, самое заметное из них: американцы говорят participants in a conference, англичане – participants of a conference;
•• installment plan брит. hire purchase (покупка в кредит);
•• license plate брит. number plate. По-русски номерной знак или просто номер (на автомобиле);
•• liquor store брит. off-license. Винно-водочный магазин. Несколько странное английское название означает, что магазин имеет лицензию продавать спиртное (амер. liquor, брит. [ wines and] spirits) «на вынос» – to be consumed off the premises;
•• mail брит. post. Но почтовое отделение в обеих странах называется post office;
•• nervy – в американском словоупотреблении имеет значение наглый (someone who has a lot of nerve). Англичанин скорее всего скажет impudent;
•• orchestra seats (в театре) брит. stalls;
•• pants брит. trousers. У англичан pants – трусы (амер. underpants или shorts);
•• pantyhose брит. tights;
•• parka брит. anorak;
•• recess брит. break. Значение этого слова – перерыв. Американцы говорят break о кратком перерыве (coffee break; we’ll take a short break for a commercial announcement) и о каникулах в школах и университетах (spring break). В остальных случаях – recess (в школе; ударение на первом слоге), intermission (на концерте) или даже interruption;
•• station wagon брит. estate car. «Волгу» такого типа у нас в свое время называли «волга-сарай». Вместо этого устаревшего и чисто разговорного «термина» сейчас предлагается «универсал»;
•• subway брит. underground;
•• teller (в банке) брит. cashier;
•• truck брит. lorry;
Where is the toilet/lavatory? Where is the bathroom/restroom/men’s room/ladies’ room. – comfort stations.

Sur cette carte sont inscrits les mots do not pass go, do not collect £200 (ou bien do not collect $200 s'il s'agit de la version américaine). Cette phrase, dont la version française est "ne passez pas par la case départ, ne recevez pas 20 000 francs", est utilisée de façon allusive et sur le mode humoristique dans différents contextes: on dira par exemple you do that again and you're going straight to jail, Bill. Do not pass go, do not collect $200 ("refais ça, Bill, et je t'assure que tu iras droit en prison). -
72 business ethics
Gen Mgta system of moral principles applied in the commercial world. Business ethics provide guidelines for acceptable behavior by organizations in both their strategy formulation and day-to-day operations. An ethical approach is becoming necessary both for corporate success and a positive corporate image. Following pressure from consumers for more ethical and responsible business practices, many organizations are choosing to make a public commitment to ethical business by formulating codes of conduct and operating principles. In doing so, they must translate into action the concepts of personal and corporate accountability, corporate giving, corporate governance, and whistleblowing. -
73 Carothers, Wallace Hume
[br]b. 27 April 1896 Burlington, Iowa, USAd. 29 April 1937 Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, USA[br]American chemist, inventor of nylon.[br]After graduating in chemistry, Carothers embarked on academic research at several universities, finally at Harvard University. His earliest published papers, from 1923, heralded the brilliance and originality of his later work. In 1928, Du Pont de Nemours persuaded him to forsake the academic world to lead their new organic-chemistry group in a programme of fundamental research at their central laboratories at Wilmington, Delaware. The next nine years were extraordinarily productive, yielding important contributions to theoretical organic chemistry and the foundation of two branches of chemical industry, namely the production of synthetic rubber and of wholly synthetic fibres.Carothers began work on high molecular weight substances yielding fibres and introduced polymerization by condensation: polymerization by addition was already known. He developed a clear understanding of the relation between the repeating structural units in a large molecule and its physical chemical properties. In 1931, Carothers found that chloroprene could be polymerized much faster than isoprene, the monomer in natural rubber. This process yielded polychloroprene or neoprene, a synthetic rubber with improved properties. Manufacture began the following year, and the material has continued to be used for speciality rubbers.There followed many publications announcing new condensations polymers. On 2 January 1935, he obtained a patent for the formation of new polyamides, including one from adipic acid and hexamethylenediamene. After four years of development work, which cost Du Pont some $27 million, this new polyamide, or nylon, reached the stage of commercial production, beginning on 23 October 1938. Nylon stockings appeared the following year and 64 million were sold during the first twelve months. However, Carothers saw none of this spectacular success: he had died by his own hand in 1937, after a long history of gradually intensifying depression.[br]Principal Honours and DistinctionsElected to the National Academy of Science 1936 (he was the first industrial organic chemist to be so honoured).BibliographyH.M.Whitby and G.S.Whitby, 1940, Collected Papers of Wallace H.Carothers on Polymerisation, New York.Further ReadingR.Adams, 1939, memoir, Biographical Memoirs of the National Academy of Sciences 20:293–309 (includes a complete list of Carothers's sixty-two scientific papers and most of his sixty-nine US patents).LRDBiographical history of technology > Carothers, Wallace Hume

74 Coolidge, William David
[br]b. 23 October 1873 Hudson, Massachusetts, USAd. 3 February 1975 New York, USA[br]American physicist and metallurgist who invented a method of producing ductile tungsten wire for electric lamps.[br]Coolidge obtained his BS from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) in 1896, and his PhD (physics) from the University of Leipzig in 1899. He was appointed Assistant Professor of Physics at MIT in 1904, and in 1905 he joined the staff of the General Electric Company's research laboratory at Schenectady. In 1905 Schenectady was trying to make tungsten-filament lamps to counter the competition of the tantalum-filament lamps then being produced by their German rival Siemens. The first tungsten lamps made by Just and Hanaman in Vienna in 1904 had been too fragile for general use. Coolidge and his life-long collaborator, Colin G. Fink, succeeded in 1910 by hot-working directly dense sintered tungsten compacts into wire. This success was the result of a flash of insight by Coolidge, who first perceived that fully recrystallized tungsten wire was always brittle and that only partially work-hardened wire retained a measure of ductility. This grasped, a process was developed which induced ductility into the wire by hot-working at temperatures below those required for full recrystallization, so that an elongated fibrous grain structure was progressively developed. Sintered tungsten ingots were swaged to bar at temperatures around 1,500°C and at the end of the process ductile tungsten filament wire was drawn through diamond dies around 550°C. This process allowed General Electric to dominate the world lamp market. Tungsten lamps consumed only one-third the energy of carbon lamps, and for the first time the cost of electric lighting was reduced to that of gas. Between 1911 and 1914, manufacturing licences for the General Electric patents had been granted for most of the developed work. The validity of the General Electric monopoly was bitterly contested, though in all the litigation that followed, Coolidge's fibering principle was upheld. Commercial arrangements between General Electric and European producers such as Siemens led to the name "Osram" being commonly applied to any lamp with a drawn tungsten filament. In 1910 Coolidge patented the use of thoria as a particular additive that greatly improved the high-temperature strength of tungsten filaments. From this development sprang the technique of "dispersion strengthening", still being widely used in the development of high-temperature alloys in the 1990s. In 1913 Coolidge introduced the first controllable hot-cathode X-ray tube, which had a tungsten target and operated in vacuo rather than in a gaseous atmosphere. With this equipment, medical radiography could for the first time be safely practised on a routine basis. During the First World War, Coolidge developed portable X-ray units for use in field hospitals, and between the First and Second World Wars he introduced between 1 and 2 million X-ray machines for cancer treatment and for industrial radiography. He became Director of the Schenectady laboratory in 1932, and from 1940 until 1944 he was Vice-President and Director of Research. After retirement he was retained as an X-ray consultant, and in this capacity he attended the Bikini atom bomb trials in 1946. Throughout the Second World War he was a member of the National Defence Research Committee.[br]Bibliography1965, "The development of ductile tungsten", Sorby Centennial Symposium on the History of Metallurgy, AIME Metallurgy Society Conference, Vol. 27, ed. 75 Dony, Jean-Jacques Daniel
SUBJECT AREA: Metallurgy[br]b. 24 February 1759 Liège, Belgiumd. 6 November 1819 Liège, Belgium[br]Belgian inventor of the horizontal retort process of zinc manufacture.[br]Dony trained initially for the Church, and it is not known how he became interested in the production of zinc. Liège, however, was close to extensive deposits of the zinc ore calamine, and brass had been made since Roman times in the region between Liège and Aix-la-Chapelle (now Aachen). William Champion's technique of brass manufacture was known there and was considered to be too complicated and expensive for the routine manufacture of brass. Dony may have learned about earlier processes of manufacturing zinc on the European continent from his friend Professor Villette of Liège University, and about English methods from Henri Delloye, a friend of both Villette and Dony and who visited Birmingham and Bristol on their behalf to study zinc smelting processes and brass manufacture at first hand. By 21 March 1805 Dony had succeeded in extracting zinc from calamine and casting it in ingots. On the basis of this success he applied to the French Republican administration for assistance and in 1806 was assigned by Napoleon the sole mining rights to the calamine deposits of the Vieille Montagne, or Altenberg, near Moresnet, five miles (8 km) from Aachen. With these rights went the obligation of developing an industrially viable method of zinc refining. In 1807 he constructed a small factory at Isle and there, after much effort, he perfected his celebrated horizontal retort process, the "Liège Method". After July 1809 zinc was being produced in abundance, and in January 1810 Dony was granted an Imperial Patent giving him a monopoly of zinc manufacture for fifteen years. He erected a rolling mill at Saint-Léonard and attempted to persuade the Minister of Marine to use zinc sheets rather than copper for the protection of ships. Between 1809 and 1810 Dony reduced the price of zinc in Liège from 8.60 to 2.60 francs per kilo. However, after 1813 he began to encounter financial problems and in 1818 he surrendered his commercial interests to his partner Dominique Mosselman (d. 1837). The horizontal retort process soon rendered obsolete that of William Champion, and variants of the Liège Method were rapidly evolved in Germany, Britain and the USA.[br]Further ReadingA.Dony, 1941, A Propos de l'industrie belge du zinc au début du XIXe siècle, Brussels. 76 Hofmann, August Wilhelm von
SUBJECT AREA: Chemical technology[br]b. 8 April 1818 Giessen, Germanyd. 2 May 1892 Berlin, Germany[br]German organic chemist.[br]The son of an architect, Hofmann began studying law and languages but was increasingly drawn to chemistry, attracted by Liebig's teaching at Giessen. In 1841 Hofmann took his doctorate with a study of coal tar. He became Privatdozent at Bonn University in 1845, but later that year he was persuaded to take up the post of first Director of the Royal College of Chemistry in London, after tenure was guaranteed as a result of Prince Albert's influence. He remained there for twenty years until he was offered professorships in chemistry at Bonn and Berlin. He accepted the latter. Hofmann continued the method of teaching chemistry, based on laboratory instruction, developed by Liebig at Giessen, and extended it to England and Berlin. A steady stream of well-trained chemists issued forth from Hofmann's tuition, concerning themselves especially with experimental organic chemistry and the industrial applications of chemistry. In 1848 one of his students, C.B. Mansfield, devised the method of fractional distillation of coal tar, to separate pure benzene, xylene and toluene, thus laying the foundations of the coal-tar industry. In 1856 another student, W.H. Perkin, prepared the first synthetic dyestuff, aniline purple, heralding the great dyestuffs industry, in which several other of his students distinguished themselves. Although keenly interested in the chemistry of dyestuffs, Hofmann did not pursue their large-scale preparation, but he stressed the importance of scientific research for success on a commercial scale. Hofmann's stimulus in this direction flagged after his return to Germany, and this was a factor in the failure of British industry to follow up their initial advantage and allow it to pass to Germany. In 1862 Hofmann prepared a dye from a derivative of triphenylmethane, which he called rosaniline. From this he derived a series of beautiful colours, ranging from blue to violet, which he patented as "Hofmann's violets" the following year.[br]Principal Honours and DistinctionsEnnobled 1888.Further ReadingJ.Volhard and E.Fischer, 1902, August Wilhelm von Hofmann, ein Lebensbild, Berlin (the basic biography).K.M.Hammond, 1967, bibliography, unpublished, (Diploma in Librarianship, London University (lists 373 items; deposited in University College, London)).LRDBiographical history of technology > Hofmann, August Wilhelm von

77 Hunter, Matthew Albert
SUBJECT AREA: Metallurgy[br]b. 9 November 1878 Auckland Province, New Zealandd. 24 March 1961 Troy, New York, USA[br]New Zealand/American technologist and academic who was a pioneer in the production of metallic titanium.[br]Hunter arrived in England in 1902, the seventh in the succession of New Zealand students nominated for the 1851 Exhibition science research scholarships (the third, in 1894, having been Ernest Rutherford). He intended to study the metallurgy of tellurides at the Royal School of Mines, but owing to the death of the professor concerned, he went instead to University College London, where his research over two years involved the molecular aggregation of liquified gases. In 1904–5 he spent a third year in Göttingen, Paris and Karlsruhe. Hunter then moved to the USA, beginning work in 1906 with the General Electric Company in Schenectady. His experience with titanium came as part of a programme to try to discover satisfactory lamp-filament materials. He and his colleagues achieved more success in producing moderately pure titanium than previous workers had done, but found the metal's melting temperature inadequate. However, his research formed the basis for the "Hunter sodium process", a modern method for producing commercial quantities of titanium. In 1908 he was appointed Assistant Professor of Electrochemistry and Physics at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in Troy, New York, where he was to remain until his retirement in 1949 as Dean Emeritus. In the 1930s he founded and headed the Institute's Department of Metallurgical Engineering. As a consultant, he was associated with the development of Invar, Managanin and Constantan alloys.[br]Principal Honours and Distinctions1851 Great Exhibition science research scholar 1902–5. SUBJECT AREA: Metallurgy[br]b. 1887d. 1954[br]German pioneer of the continuous casting of metals.[br]Junghans was of the family that owned Gebrüder Junghans, one of the largest firms in the German watch-and clockmaking industry. From 1906 to 1918 he served in the German Army, after which he took a course in metallurgy and analytical chemistry at the Technical High School in Stuttgart. Junghans was then given control of the brassworks owned by his family. He wanted to make castings simply and cheaply, but he found that he lacked the normal foundry equipment. By 1927, formulating his ideas on continuous casting, he had conceived a way of overcoming this deficiency and began experiments. By the time the firm was taken over by Wieland-Werke AG in 1931, Junghans had achieved positive results. A test plant was erected in 1932, and commercial production of continuously cast metal followed the year after. Wieland told Junghans that a brassfounder who had come up through the trade would never have hit on the idea: it took an outsider like Junghans to do it. He was made Technical Director of Wielands but left in 1935 to work privately on the development of continuous casting for all metals. He was able to license the process for non-ferrous metals during 1936–9 in Germany and other countries, but the Second World War interrupted his work; however, the German government supported him and a production plant was built. In 1948 he was able to resume work on the continuous casting of steel, which he had been considering since 1936. He pushed on in spite of financial difficulties and produced the first steel by this process at Schorndorf in March 1949. From 1950 he made agreements with four firms to work towards the pilot plant stage, and this was achieved in 1954 at Mannesmann's Huckingen works. The aim of continuous casting is to bypass the conventional processes of casting molten steel into ingots, reheating the ingots and shaping them by rolling them in a large mill. Essentially, in continuous casting, molten steel is drawn through the bottom of a ladle and down through a water-cooled copper mould. The unique feature of Junghans's process was the vertically reciprocating mould, which prevented the molten metal sticking as it passed through. A continuous length of steel is taken off and cooled until it is completely solidified into the required shape. The idea of continuous casting can be traced back to Bessemer, and although others tried to apply it later, they did not have any success. It was Junghans who, more than anybody, made the process a reality.[br]Further ReadingK.Sperth and A.Bungeroth, 1953, "The Junghans method of continuous casting of steel", Metal Treatment and Drop Forging, Mayn.J.Jewkes et al., 1969, The Sources of Invention, 2nd edn, London: Macmillan, pp. 287 ff.LRD -
79 Lister, Samuel Cunliffe, 1st Baron Masham
SUBJECT AREA: Textiles[br]b. 1 January 1815 Calverly Hall, Bradford, Englandd. 2 February 1906 Swinton Park, near Bradford, England[br]English inventor of successful wool-combing and waste-silk spinning machines.[br]Lister was descended from one of the old Yorkshire families, the Cunliffe Listers of Manningham, and was the fourth son of his father Ellis. After attending a school on Clapham Common, Lister would not go to university; his family hoped he would enter the Church, but instead he started work with the Liverpool merchants Sands, Turner \& Co., who frequently sent him to America. In 1837 his father built for him and his brother a worsted mill at Manningham, where Samuel invented a swivel shuttle and a machine for making fringes on shawls. It was here that he first became aware of the unhealthy occupation of combing wool by hand. Four years later, after seeing the machine that G.E. Donisthorpe was trying to work out, he turned his attention to mechanizing wool-combing. Lister took Donisthorpe into partnership after paying him £12,000 for his patent, and developed the Lister-Cartwright "square nip" comber. Until this time, combing machines were little different from Cartwright's original, but Lister was able to improve on this with continuous operation and by 1843 was combing the first fine botany wool that had ever been combed by machinery. In the following year he received an order for fifty machines to comb all qualities of wool. Further combing patents were taken out with Donisthorpe in 1849, 1850, 1851 and 1852, the last two being in Lister's name only. One of the important features of these patents was the provision of a gripping device or "nip" which held the wool fibres at one end while the rest of the tuft was being combed. Lister was soon running nine combing mills. In the 1850s Lister had become involved in disputes with others who held combing patents, such as his associate Isaac Holden and the Frenchman Josué Heilmann. Lister bought up the Heilmann machine patents and afterwards other types until he obtained a complete monopoly of combing machines before the patents expired. His invention stimulated demand for wool by cheapening the product and gave a vital boost to the Australian wool trade. By 1856 he was at the head of a wool-combing business such as had never been seen before, with mills at Manningham, Bradford, Halifax, Keighley and other places in the West Riding, as well as abroad.His inventive genius also extended to other fields. In 1848 he patented automatic compressed air brakes for railways, and in 1853 alone he took out twelve patents for various textile machines. He then tried to spin waste silk and made a second commercial career, turning what was called "chassum" and hitherto regarded as refuse into beautiful velvets, silks, plush and other fine materials. Waste silk consisted of cocoon remnants from the reeling process, damaged cocoons and fibres rejected from other processes. There was also wild silk obtained from uncultivated worms. This is what Lister saw in a London warehouse as a mass of knotty, dirty, impure stuff, full of bits of stick and dead mulberry leaves, which he bought for a halfpenny a pound. He spent ten years trying to solve the problems, but after a loss of £250,000 and desertion by his partner his machine caught on in 1865 and brought Lister another fortune. Having failed to comb this waste silk, Lister turned his attention to the idea of "dressing" it and separating the qualities automatically. He patented a machine in 1877 that gave a graduated combing. To weave his new silk, he imported from Spain to Bradford, together with its inventor Jose Reixach, a velvet loom that was still giving trouble. It wove two fabrics face to face, but the problem lay in separating the layers so that the pile remained regular in length. Eventually Lister was inspired by watching a scissors grinder in the street to use small emery wheels to sharpen the cutters that divided the layers of fabric. Lister took out several patents for this loom in his own name in 1868 and 1869, while in 1871 he took out one jointly with Reixach. It is said that he spent £29,000 over an eleven-year period on this loom, but this was more than recouped from the sale of reasonably priced high-quality velvets and plushes once success was achieved. Manningham mills were greatly enlarged to accommodate this new manufacture.In later years Lister had an annual profit from his mills of £250,000, much of which was presented to Bradford city in gifts such as Lister Park, the original home of the Listers. He was connected with the Bradford Chamber of Commerce for many years and held the position of President of the Fair Trade League for some time. In 1887 he became High Sheriff of Yorkshire, and in 1891 he was made 1st Baron Masham. He was also Deputy Lieutenant in North and West Riding.[br]Principal Honours and DistinctionsCreated 1st Baron Masham 1891.Bibliography1849, with G.E.Donisthorpe, British patent no. 12,712. 1850, with G.E. 80 Lovelock, James Ephraim
SUBJECT AREA: Domestic appliances and interiors, Electricity, Electronics and information technology[br]b. 26 July 1919 Brixton, London, England[br]English biologist and philosopher, inventor of the microwave oven and electron capture detector.[br]Lovelock was brought up in Brixton in modest circumstances. At the age of 4 he was given a toy electrical set, which first turned his attention towards the study of science. From the Strand School, Brixton, he went on to the universities of Manchester and London, and after graduating in science, in 1941 he joined the National Institute for Medical Research, Mill Hill, as a staff scientist, remaining there for twenty years. During the early 1950s, he and his colleagues were engaged in research into freezing live animals and bringing them back to life by heating: Lovelock was struck by the intense pain this process caused the animals, and he sought a more humane method. He tried diathermy or internal heating through the effect of a continuous wave magnetron borrowed from the Navy. He found that the animals were brought back to life painlessly, and impressed with his success he tried baking a potato for his lunch in the apparatus and found that it cooked amazingly quickly compared with the one hour normally needed in an ordinary oven. Lovelock had invented the microwave oven, but its commercial possibilities were not at first realized.In the late 1950s he invented the electron capture detector, which proved to be more sensitive than any other analytical equipment in detecting and measuring toxic substances. The apparatus therefore had obvious uses in testing the quality of the environment and so offered a tremendous boost to the "green" movement. In 1961 he was invited to joint the US National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) to employ the apparatus in an attempt to detect life in space.In the early 1970s Lovelock relinquished his biological work in order to devote his attention to philosophical matters, specifically to develop his theory of the Universe, now widely celebrated as the "Gaia theory". In this controversial theory, Lovelock regards our planet and all its living beings, including humans, as a single living organism.[br]Principal Honours and DistinctionsCBE 1990. FRS 1974.
