Солдат, идеально приспособленный для воинского дела, циник или, быть может, всего-навсего реалист (он не закапывает трупы, поскольку те могут оказаться заминированы), который никогда не станет офицером, несмотря на авторитет среди солдат, – таким предстает перед нами сержант Зак. Если ему случается проявить человеческие эмоции, то лишь как жестокие и неконтролируемые поступки. Пример – реакция на смерть спасшего его мальчишки. Фуллер, склонный к парадоксам, доказывает таким образом, что для хорошего солдата эмоциональность недопустима.В своей 3-й картине Фуллер оттачивает барочный стиль при помощи зигзагообразного чередования планов, где очень крупный план неожиданно сменяется общим; он также использует прерывистый, электризующий темп и готовит для актеров яркие и зрелищные моменты. Этот барочный стиль в конце концов рождает крайне реалистичное описание войны, где эмоциональные всплески сменяются долгим ожиданием, а лихорадочность ― истощением. На фоне войны развивается фантасмагорическая история, где доминируют ужас, непонимание и отрыв от родной земли. Ведь пехотинец Фуллера, будь он перенесен на Восток или в Европу, всегда находится вдалеке.В Стальной каске растительность и архитектура образуют необычный мир, который вызывает у чужака сначала тревогу и страх, затем – восхищение и, наконец, своеобразное загадочное умиротворение. Впрочем, Фуллера всегда увлекали восточные религиозные постройки (см. храмы в Доме из бамбука, House of Bamboo, 1955). Правда, сама восточная религия отстраненности от мира полностью противоположна природе Фуллера и всякой военной деятельности в принципе. Фильм, обогащенный игрой на контрастах, наполнен яркими образами – как, например, флакон для переливания крови, прикрепленный к руке статуи Будды.
