Убийство – фильм, основанный на постоянном взаимном пересечении искусства и реальности, театра и хроники происшествий, с намеренными аллюзиями на «Гамлета», – ставит своих персонажей в положение головокружительного неравновесия между свободой, с одной стороны, и фатальностью их судьбы и ролью, которую они вынуждены играть в этом мире, – с другой. Они идут по узенькой тропинке на краю пропасти. Дайана осуждена, но молчит и ждет помощи неизвестно от какой спасительной силы: не зная о собственной невиновности, она готова скорее умереть, чем сидеть в тюрьме. Ее свобода – в смирении; она как будто доверяет свою судьбу кому-то другому. Сэр Джон после минутной слабости на совещании присяжных чувствует на себе моральную ответственность; им движет сила более загадочная, чем любовь к актрисе. Наконец, сам убийца радикальным образом отличается от породы соблазнительных и отвратительных хичкоковских преступников. В отличие от них, он сам, в некотором роде, жертва. Как отмечает Морис Яковар в книге «Британские фильмы Хичкока» (Maurice Yakowar, Hitchcock's British Films, Archon Books, Connecticut, 1977), в романе-первоисточнике Фейн был гомосексуалистом. Хичкок делает его метисом, полукровкой: тем самым он должен вызывать неприязнь у Дайаны, выросшей в Индии. Этим элегантным решением Хичкок щадит не только общественные нравы, но и тайну души его героя. Из тех же побуждений любовь сэра Джона к Дайане так и не будет конкретно обозначена. Храня верность собственной внутренней логике, Лумет снимает декоративный фильм, в котором декоративным становится все, включая актерскую игру.Экранизация предполагает (и не без оснований), что всем – или почти всем – известен финал этой истории, и отказывается переносить действие в современный контекст, в отличие от романа-первоисточника. В самом деле, хронологически сохранив верность роману (опубликованному в 1934 г.), авторы фильма как нельзя более извратили его дух, переключив зрительское внимание с действия как такового на восхищенную и ироничную реконструкцию минувшей эпохи. Это типичный фильм в стиле ретро. Тем не менее нельзя сказать, что речь идет о совершенно обезличенном фильме, поскольку развязка интриги затрагивает тему, которая па всем протяжении карьеры Лумета оставалась главной для его творчества, а именно – динамика внутри группы людей. В данном случае 3-мерный формат оказывается, если можно так выразиться, огромной и вопиющей тавтологией, поскольку далее «в плоском виде» режиссура Хичкока так осваивает тесное пространство, предоставленное почти единственной декорацией, что приобретает необыкновенную объемность. Чтобы выделить этот прием, Хичкок даже отказался от традиционных шоковых эффектов и ограничился тем, что поставил камеру в углубление так, чтобы объектив часто оказывался на уровне пола.При убийстве набирайте «У», как никакой другой фильм Хичкока, ставит важный вопрос о виртуозности режиссера. Помогает ли она раскрыться подлинной теме фильма или. наоборот, скрывает ее? Ответить можно так: и то, и другое сразу - и в этом ключик к творчеству Хичкока, с которым мало чье творчество в истории кино может сравниться по двойственности, и к поведению режиссера в интервью, появлениям на публике и бесчисленным шутовским подводкам, записанным для телесериала «Алфред Хичкок представляет». Виртуозность и все поведение Хичкока нацелены на то, чтобы окружить плотным туманом одну скандальную истину, которая была для него очевидна, но он гнал ее от себя всеми силами, а именно: для некоторых людей преступление является самым естественным и желанным поступком. Как и многие голливудские режиссеры, но по причинам, больше связанным с моралью, Хичкок спрятал в глубине своих, на 1-й взгляд, самых поверхностных фильмов частицу тайного смысла всего своего творчества.
