5 Chihuahua
(Sp. model spelled same [t∫iwáwa] (a place name))1) Southwest: 1930. A mild expletive common in the Southwest. Also Ay, Chihuahua. Santamaría references Ay, Chihuahua as an exclamation used as a euphemism for chingar 'to copulate.' Galván also references Chihuahua as an interjection of varying intensity of meaning. He says that in Chicano Spanish it can mean everything from 'Goodness gracious!' to 'Hell!'2) West: 1936. A spur with a large rowel, often intricately decorated with silver. Known as a Chihuahua spur.3) According to Hendrickson, a slang term used on the frontier for "a little town with a large number of saloons and dancehalls."See also Chihuahua town below.4) A freighting wagon or large cart with two solid, wooden wheels. Also Chihuahua cart. No Spanish sources reference meanings (2), (3), and (4), but it is probable that (2) and (4) originated in the state of Chihuahua, Mexico. -
6 coyote
(Sp. model spelled same [kojóte] < Nahuatl cóyotl 'coyote')Noun forms:1) Clark: 1820s. A small American wolf ( Canis latrans). Spanish sources provide the same genus and species. Santamaría indicates that it is a wolf about the size of a large dog. It has yellowish-gray fur and is endowed with instincts and cunning, making it similar in behavior to the fox.Alternate forms: cayeute, cayota, cayote, cayute, collote, coyoto, cuiota, cyote, kiote, otie. Also called barking wolf, brush wolf, cased wolf, medicine wolf, prairie wolf.2) Southern California: 1872. An Indian or a person with one Indian parent. Santamaría says that coyote sometimes refers to a criollo, or a person of Spanish descent born in the Americas, or to his/her parents. Cobos concurs, pointing out that in southern Colorado and New Mexico it also means the offspring of an Anglo-American, Indo-Hispanic marriage. Sobarzo indicates that it is a synonym for mestizo or mestiza, a mixture of European and Indian blood, and is common in the feminine. Galván provides a similar meaning for the term in Chicano Spanish, namely "half-breed."3) A contemptible person; a liar or cheat; one who sneaks around like a coyote. Also a squatter.4) According to Blevins, a person from the Dakotas.5) DARE (Adams): 1903. A dun-colored horse with a dark strip down its back. Also called coyote dun.6) Verb forms: to clear out; run away. -
7 cuñado
(Sp. model spelled same [kuɲáðo] < Latin cognatus 'blood relative' < natus 'born' and con 'together'. The term originally meant any kind of relative, and later came to mean 'brother-in-law')Bentley: 1836. The General Spanish term for a brother-in-law. It was also used jocularly for the suitor of one's sister, or future brother-in-law. Bentley says that it "is well-known by Southwesterners with a knowledge of Spanish." Galván notes that in Chicano Spanish it is used to address a friend who has a sister and to imply that the speaker is interested in dating her. Cobos indicates that in New Mexico and Southern Colorado Spanish it means a "pal, chum, friend, or protégé." A cowboy with a Mexican girlfriend would have received this form of address from her brothers and others. -
8 gotch
( gacho [gát∫o], probably a postverbal adjective derived from agachar 'to lower, bend; squat' of uncertain origin)Kansas: 1905; Arizona: 1910. As Clark notes, drooping or askew, as an ear on a horse or donkey. The DRAE references gacho as an adjective meaning curved or drooping downward. It also describes a cow or ox that has one or both horns drooping downward; in Spanish the term may also refer to the horn itself. Santamaría concurs and adds that in Mexico the adjective is also used to describe an animal that, because of an accident or illness, has lost the ability to move one or both ears, hence the ears are always drooping. Cobos notes that in New Mexico and Southern Colorado Spanish gacho means bad or lousy, and Galván references it as ugly or ridiculous. -
