ἕρκος, τό (ἔργω, εἴργω), 1) Einschluß, Einfriedigung, Umhägung, Zaun, πᾶν, ὅσον ἂν ἕνεκα κωλύσεως εἴργῃ τι περιέχον ἕρκος εἰκὸς ὀνομάζειν Plat. Soph. 220 c; so bei Hom. Zaun um einen Garten, Od. 7, 112, ἀλωάων Il. 5, 89; ἀλωῆς H. h. Tr. 604 ist ἕρκος ἱερόν das Gehege um den Altar; ἑρκέων ἐγκεκλῃμένους, in des Lagers Wall eingeschlossen, Ai. 1253; σφραγῖδος ἕρκει, der Verschluß des Siegels, Tr. 612. – Der Schutz, die Schutzwehr, Schutzmauer, vom Schilde, ἕρκος ἀκόντων Il. 15, 496, vgl. 5, 315; φράξαντο δὲ νῆας ἕρκεϊ χαλκείῳ 15, 566; Hes.
