5 ῥαθάμιγξ
ῥαθάμιγξ, - ιγγοςGrammatical information: f., most pl.Derivatives: ῥαθαμίζω `to besprinkle' (Opp., Nonn.; like σάλπιγξ: - πίζω). By-forms ῥαθμίζεσθαι ῥαίνεσθαι; ῥαθαί-νεται ῥαίνεται, βρέχεται H.; ῥαθασσόμενοι ῥαινόμενοι H., Phot.Origin: PG [a word of Pre-Greek origin]Etymology: Popular formation in - ιγξ like λάϊγγες, στροφάλιγξ, πύλιγγες (s.v.) a.o. (Chantraine Form. 398ff., Schwyzer 498); further analysis unknown. As basis could have functioned a noun *ῥαθαμός ( οὑλαμός, ποταμός a.o.); beside it apparently *ῥαθμός in ῥαθμίζεσθαι (prob. through syncope, a is often found in Pre-Greek). As βαθμός: βαίνω also *ῥαθμός: ῥαίνω? Through crosses or enlargements ῥα-θαίνω (: ῥαίνω), ῥαθάσσω (: σταλάσσω). Further s. ῥαίνω. -- Diff. Bechtel Lex. s.v. (to ῥώθωνες `nostrils'). -- Clearly a Pre-Greek word (not in Furnée).Page in Frisk: 2,638-639Greek-English etymological dictionary (Ελληνικά-Αγγλικά ετυμολογική λεξικό) > ῥαθάμιγξ

6 σμαραγέω
Grammatical information: v.Other forms: Aor. - ῆσαιCompounds: As 2. member (directly referring to the verb) in ἐρι-σμάραγος `droning loudly' (Hes. of Ζεύς, late also of θάλασσα a. o.), also πολυ-, βαρυ-, ἁλι-σμάραγος a. o. (Opp., Nonn.). Also σμαραγίζω `id.' (Hes. Th. 693), σμαράσσω (EM), μαράσσω (Erot.).Origin: PG [a word of Pre-Greek origin]Etymology: Onomatopoet. like λαλαγέω, παταγέω, σφαραγέομαι, ῥαθαγέω a. o. with λαλαγή, πάταγος, σφάραγος, ῥάθαγος a. o.; σμαράσσω like πατάσσω, ῥαθάσσω a. o. -- Improbable hypothesis on the origin (reformation of σφαραγέομαι after ( σ)μάραγνα `whip') by Güntert Reimwortbild. 159. -- Furnée 227 considers σφάραγος as a variant (with φ\/μ) and so takes the two words as Pre-Greek.Page in Frisk: 2,747Greek-English etymological dictionary (Ελληνικά-Αγγλικά ετυμολογική λεξικό) > σμαραγέω

On the formal connection with στάζω Debrunner IF 21, 224. -- Usually connected with a root ( s)tel- `drip, urinate', to which a. o. also τέλμα and NEngl. stale `urine' would belong (Bq, WP. 2, 642f., Pok. 1018 w. lit.); not esp. convincing. -- On ἀνασταλύζω s. v.Page in Frisk: 2,776Greek-English etymological dictionary (Ελληνικά-Αγγλικά ετυμολογική λεξικό) > σταλάσσω
