21 εἴρω 1
εἴρω 1.Grammatical information: v.Meaning: `knit together',Other forms: mostly present, aor. εἶραι, ἔρσαι (Ion.-Att.; cf. Schwyzer 753), perf. med. Ptz. ἐερμένος, εἰρμένος (Ion. etc.), plusquamperf. ἔερτο (Hom.), perf. act. δι-εῖρκα (X.) `fit together', mostly with prefix, esp. συν-είρωDerivatives: ἕρματα pl. `earhangers' (Od.), `sling' (Ael.), also καθέρματα (Anacr.); ἔνερσις ( ἐνείρω) `fit together' (Th. 1, 6), δίερσις `sting through' (hell.); from present εἱρμός `connecting' (Arist.; on spir. asper s. below), συνειρμός (Demetr. Eloc. 180); - with ο-Ablaut ὅρμος `chain, collar' (s. v.), from where ὁρμιά, ὁρμαθός.Etymology: Beside the Jot present εἴρω (as simplex only Pi. and Arist.), with full grade, Latin has serō; this etymology supposes, that εἴρω lost the spir. asper, which is understandable as the simplex is rare compared with συν-είρω etc.; an aspirated εἵρω is mentioned by EM 304, 30 (s. Solmsen Unt. 292 n. 2). Also the verbal nouns may have the old aspir., if it did not arise sec. before ρμ (cf. Schwyzer 306). - Traces of the verb and nouns in: Italic, Osc. aserum `asserere', in Celtic OIr. sern(a)id `serit', nasal present, coincided with sern(a)id `sternit' (Thurneysen Grammar 133); further the nouns Skt. sarat f. `thread' (Lex.), OLith. sėris `thread'; further OWNo. sørvi n. `collar' (PGm. *saru̯ii̯a-), from where the old Germ. word for `weapon, equipment', e. g. Goth. sarwa n. pl. (PGm. *saru̯a-, IE *sor-u̯o-; with * sor-mo- parallel to ὅρμος); also Toch. A sark, B serke m. `wreath' (Schneider KZ 66, 259, Duchesne-Guillemin BSL 41, 161; IE * sor-ko-, * sor-g(h)o-). - The parallel ἔνερσις = inserti-ō is due to parallel innovation. - Diff. on εἴρω Sommer Lautstud. 134. - W.-Hofmann s. serō.Page in Frisk: 1,469Greek-English etymological dictionary (Ελληνικά-Αγγλικά ετυμολογική λεξικό) > εἴρω 1

22 ἕρση
Grammatical information: f.Meaning: `dew', pl. `dewdrops' (Il.).Other forms: ep. poet. ἐέρση, Dor. ἕρσᾱ, Pi. N. 3, 78 ἔερσᾰ (s. Solmsen Wortforsch. 240 n. 1); in anlaut diff. ἄερσαν την δρόσον. Κρῆτες H., ἀέρσην ( PLit. Lond. 60 [hell.])Compounds: As 2. member perh. in Λιτυέρσης, s. v.Derivatives: ἑρσήεις, ἐερσήεις `dewy' (Il., AP), ἑρσαῖα ἐαρινά, νέα, ἁπαλά, δροσώδη; ἐρρήεντα δροσώδη, καταψυκτικά H. with Att. - ρρ- against the hieratic Ionism in Ε῝ρση as name of the daughter of Kekrop; ἑρσώδης `id.' (Thphr.).Origin: IE [Indo-European] [81] *h₁u̯ers- `rain'Etymology: Unclear is Έρρηφόροι, acc. to H. οἱ τῃ̃ Ε῝ρσῃ ἐπιτελοῦντες τὰ νομιζόμενα, with ἐρρηφορέω; also ἐρσηφόροι, - ρία beside ἀρρη-φόροι; s. v.; s. Nilsson Gr. Rel. 1, 441. The normal form is ἐ(Ϝ)έρση \< h₁uers-; the foms ἀέρση (cf. Solmsen Unt. 261) and those cited above are unexplained, as is ἕρσαι. Sanskrit has varṣám n. `rain' and várṣati `it rains', IE *u̯érseti. Beside it iterative-intensive *u̯orseíō \> Gr. οὑρέω `urinate' (euphemistically) with postverbal οὖρον; here the laryngeal may have beenlost before the o-vocalism; s. also οὑρανός. Because of the accent and because of the ε-vowel ἕρση cannot be a verbal noun (one would expect *οὑρά \< *u̯orsā); rather it is a collective deriv. from a neutral noun *u̯er-os-, u̯er-s-, and further cognates in e. g. MIr. frass `rain', Skt. vŕ̥ṣan- `masculine, man, bull, stallion'.Page in Frisk: 1,566-567Greek-English etymological dictionary (Ελληνικά-Αγγλικά ετυμολογική λεξικό) > ἕρση

23 μέτασσαι
Grammatical information: f. pl.Meaning: `lambs born later, i.e. of middle age', between the πρόγονοι and the ἕρσαι (ι221); τὰ μέτασσα n. pl. `later' (h. Merc. 125 ; Zumbach Neuerungen 27).Origin: IE [Indo-European] [702] *meth₂-ti̯o-? `later born'Etymology: To μέτα like ἔπισσαι `daughters born later' to ἔπι; so prob. from *μετα-τι̯ο-, f. -τι̯ᾰ like Skt. ápa-tya- a. o. (Schulze KZ 40, 414 n. 1 = Kl. Schr. 71 n. 1 [s. also Kl. Schr. 675] after Ebel KZ 1, 302, Bechtel Lex. s. v., Specht Ursprung 197), Benveniste, Origines 82. -- Diff. Giles ClassRev. 3, 3 f. (approving Schwyzer 472 w. n. 2): μετ-ασσαι = μετ-οῦσαι, prop. "being between", archaic zero grade ptc. f. of μετ-εῖναι. Then however both τὰ μέτασσα (for τὰ μετόντα) and ἔπ-ισσαι must be explained as analogical formations.See also: Vgl. περισσός.Page in Frisk: 2,218Greek-English etymological dictionary (Ελληνικά-Αγγλικά ετυμολογική λεξικό) > μέτασσαι

24 ὀρσοθύρη
Grammatical information: f.Meaning: esp. a side-door or side-opening at the back, leading from the men's hall in the λαύρη to the rooms upstairs (χ 126, 132, 333); s. Wace Journ ofHellStud. 71, 203ff. w. lit., Bérard REGr. 67, 18 ff.); also sens. obsc. (Semon. 17).Origin: XX [etym. unknown]Etymology: Explanation debated. One is tempted to identify the first element with ὄρρος, ὄρσος `hindmost' (Doederlein Hom. Gloss. 2. 340; thus v. Wilamowitz Eur. Her. 376 n., Wackernagel Unt. 226, Lasso de la Vega Emer. 23, 114ff.). This interpretation is as regards the matter and stile without objections; cf. παλίν-ορσος, ἄψ-ορρος and Wackernagel l.c. Others explain it as "high door" connecting either Skt. r̥ṣvá- `high' or varṣ- in várṣ-man- n. `culmen' (Froehde BB 3, 19 ff., Kalén Quaest. gramm. gr. 75ff., extensice w. lit., also on εἰρεθύρη [H.] and ἔρθυρις [EM], WP. 1,138; similar Büchner RhM 83, 97 ff., not convincing; s. also Risch IF 59, 20). -- In the same sphere belongs ὀρρόση-λος ὀδός (cod. ὁδ-). Ίταλιῶται H.; after Kalén l.c. "high threshold". -- With ὀρσο- also: ὀρσο-λόπος surn. of Ares (Anacr. 70) with ὀρσολοπ-εύω (metr. for - έω) `attack, revile' (h. Merc. 308, Max. 102), - έομαι `be teased, disquieted' (A. Pers. 10); ὀρσο-λόπος therefore `attacker v.t.', prop. = ὁ λέπων τὸν ὄρρον (sc. τοῦ φυγόντος πολεμίου); s. Schwyzer Glotta 12, 21ff. (with Müller-Strübing), Lasso de la Vega a.o. Diff. Kalén l.c. ("Hochprahler"). -- ὀρσο-δάκνη f. name of an insect that eats buds (Arist.); naming motive unknown. Unclear also ὀρσοί τῶν ἀρνῶν οἱ ἔσχατοι γενόμενοι H.; the similarity with ἕρσαι (s.v.) jas long been observed (to be rejected Lasso de la Vega l.c).Page in Frisk: 2,428Greek-English etymological dictionary (Ελληνικά-Αγγλικά ετυμολογική λεξικό) > ὀρσοθύρη
