72 δρῦς
δρῦς, δρυός, ἡ, die Eiche. Die δρῠς war dem Zeus heilig, dessen Stimme aus der Orakeleiche von Dodona ertönte. Die Eiche scheint im Leben der ältesten Griechen überhaupt eine große Rolle gespielt zu haben; uralte Sprichwörter: ἀλλὰ καὶ ὧς μοι εἰπὲ τεὸν γένος, ὁππόϑεν ἐσσί· οὐ γὰρ ἀπὸ δρυός ἐσσι παλαιφάτου, οὐδ' ἀπὸ πέτρης, »du stammst doch nicht von der Eiche, auch nicht vom Felsen«, d. h. du mußt doch Eltern und Vaterland haben, du bist doch nicht vom Himmel gefallen, nicht hinter dem Zaune gefunden; παρϑένος ἠίϑεός τ' ὀαρίζετον ἀλλήλοιιν, es ist nicht Zeit, ein ruhiges und weitschweifiges Gespräch zu führen (von der Eiche und vom Felsen anhebend). In altertümlicher Sprache soll das Wort δρῠς die allgemeine Bedeutung »Baum« gehabt haben; Sanskrit. drus = Holz, Baum, drumas = Baum, dâru = Holz; Goth. triu = Baum; Alts. trio = Balken, Holz, Baum. Hiernach wäre für δρῠς die Bedeutung »Baum« die Grundbedeutung; πιείρας δρυός = Fichte; δρυὸς ἄσπετον ἔρνος = Oelbaum. Redensart δρῠν φέρειν διὰ τῆς ἀγορᾶς, einen Baumzweig tragen, was die Freigelassenen bei den Panathenäen tun mußten. Auf Menschen übertr., wie alter Knast (vgl. γεράνδρυον), ein alter Mensch -

74 ἐρέας
Grammatical information: n. pl.?Etymology: With the exception of ἐρέας all forms can be explained from *ἔρος n., which with ἔρνος `sprout' may belong to ὄρνυμι. So probably to be corrected to ἔρεα. A masc. *ἐρής would be difficult, in spite of Bechtel Dial. 1, 205. To ὄρνυμι, where one expects * h₃r- however.Page in Frisk: 1,549Greek-English etymological dictionary (Ελληνικά-Αγγλικά ετυμολογική λεξικό) > ἐρέας

75 ὀλοφώιος
Grammatical information: adj.Meaning: meaning uncertain, in Hom. only in plur. n. ὀλοφώϊα, subst. or as adjumct of δήνεα (Od.); hell. in sing. of λύκων ἔρνος (Theoc. 25, 185), of ἰός `poison' (Nic. Th. 327).Origin: XX [etym. unknown]Etymology: Formation like μητρώϊος, ἡρώϊος, λεχώϊος (hell.) a.o., so perh. from a subst. in - ως or -ώ. By the ancients later associated with ὄλλυμι and interpreted as `pernicious' (H. ὀλοφώϊα ὀλέθρια, οἷον ὀλοποιά, δεινὰ βουλεύ-ματα); in Hom. however as `deceitful' connected with ἐλεφαίρομαι (Benfey Wurzellex., Schulze Q. 22, Bechtel Lex. a.o.).Page in Frisk: 2,383Greek-English etymological dictionary (Ελληνικά-Αγγλικά ετυμολογική λεξικό) > ὀλοφώιος

Com., Phryn., Poll.).Origin: XX [etym. unknown]Etymology: Formally identical with the ptc. aor. of ὄρνυμι, which may be also semantically possible; cf. ἔρνος. 77 σμῆνος
Grammatical information: n.Meaning: `beehive, skep' (Hes. Th. 594, IG 12, 326, 15, Pl. R. 552c, Arist.), `swarm of bees (wasps), swarm in general' (A. Pers. 128 [lyr.], S. Fr. 897, com., Pl., Arist. etc.); pl. σμῆνα (Orac. ap. Plu. 2, 96b), σμῆναι (leg. -η?) τῶν μελισσῶν οἱ κηροδόχοι, ἤτοι αἱ θῆκαι H.; as des. of goddesses (for trad. σεμναί) h. Merc. 552 (Feyel Rev. Arch. 1946, 5ff.)?Other forms: Dor. (Theoc.) σμᾱ̃νος.Compounds: Some compp., e. g. σμην-ουργός m. `beekeeper' (Ael., Poll.), φιλό-σμηνος ( μέλισσα) `loving swarms, appearing in swarms' (Nonn.).Derivatives: σμην-ίον n. dimin. `beehive' (Dsc.), = πρόπολις H.; - ών, - ῶνος m. `station (stand) of beehives' (Olymos Ia; ζμ-), - ιών `id.' (Apollon. Mir.), - ηδόν `in swarms' (Hdn. Epim.).Origin: PG [a word of Pre-Greek origin]X [probably]Etymology: Formation as ἔθνος, κτῆνος, ἔρνος, τέμενος a.o.; orig. meaning rather `swarm (of bees)' than `beehive'. Unexplained. To be rejected Johansson BB 13, 119 and Bezzenberger KZ 42, 192 (s. Bq); thus Prellwitz Glotta 19, 103. -- Furnée 376 compares ἰσμῆναι θῆκαι, ἀκόλουθοι H. (see Latte); this does not prove that the word is Pre-Greek, but this seems more probable to me (I don't see why DELG says "prob. of IE origin".)Page in Frisk: 2,749Greek-English etymological dictionary (Ελληνικά-Αγγλικά ετυμολογική λεξικό) > σμῆνος
