94 ξυστίς
A robe of rich and soft material reaching to the feet, worn by women of quality, Ar.Lys. 1190 (lyr.), Antiph.99, Eub.90.3, Theoc.2.74 ;τρύφημα παρυφές, ξυστίδα Ar.Fr. 320
;ταῖς ξ. ταῖς χρυσοπάστοις Eub.135
;ξ. μαλακάς Plu.2.406d
; worn by great men (esp. by victorious charioteers in their chariots) as a robe of state, Ar.Nu.70, cf. Pl.R. 420e ; by Trag. heroes, Cratin.268, Duris 14, 70 J., cf. Harp. s.v., AB284:—Hsch. and Tim.Lex., who say it was also used by Com., prob. refer to the use of the women's ξ. on the Com. stage.II = ξύστρα, στλεγγίς, Epich.97, Diph.52. (Perh. from ξυστός, ή, όν, as epith. of cloth, orig. garment made of cut (shorn, clipped) fabric, such as fustian, plush, velvet, etc. ; cf. ξύω IV,ξυστός 3
: for the semantic relation between ξυστίς and ξυστόν (pole, spear, etc.), and ξύω, cf. ONorse skrúd 'some kind of textile fabric', skrúd-kloedi 'suit of fine stuff', Engl. shroud 'loppings of a tree, branch, bough', both cogn. with shred.) -

96 ξαίνω
Grammatical information: v.Meaning: `card, comb wool ', metaph.. `scratch, mangle, lacerate' (ξ 423, IA.).Other forms:, fut. ξανῶ, aor. ξῆναι (late ξᾶναι), pass. ξανθῆναι, perf. midd. ἔξασμαι (hell. also ἔξαμμαι).Derivatives: ξάντης m. `woolcarder' (Pl.) with ξαντική (sc. τέχνη) f. `the art of carding wool' (Pl.), f. ξάντριαι `woolcadsters' (tit. of a drama of A.); ξάσμα n. `carded wool' (S. Fr. 1073), also ξάμμα (H. s. πεῖκος), ἀναξασ-μός m. `lacerating' (midd.), ξάνσις f. `carding of wool,' (Gloss.), ξάνιον n. `comb for carding' (Poll., AB, H.), also = ἐπί-ξηνον (Poll.), prob. after κτένιον, but not with Specht Ursprung 239 as old formation; ξανάω (Nik.), - ῆσαι (S.Fr. 498) `(with carding) work hard', ἀποξανᾶν κακοπαθεῖν H.; cf. ὑφανάω: ὑφαίνω and similar cases in Schwyzer 700. -- Here prob. also ἐπίξηνον `chopping-block' with unclear formation (diff., hardly correct, s.v.).Origin: PG [a word of Pre-Greek origin]X [probably]Etymology: Technical expression of woolpreparation, prob. first after the related ὑφαίνω; to ξέω, ξύω (s. vv. and Schwyzer 714). Outside Greek there are no agreements; the comparison with Lat. sentis m. `thorn-bush' (since Persson Stud. 135) is quite hypothetical. After Haas Ling. Posn. 3,76ff. ξαίνω, ξέω, ξύω belong as `protoidg.' to NHG hauen a. cognates, like ὀξύς to ὠκύς etc. (?). The (root)form ξαν- is difficult to explain from IE.; so Pre-Greek? Note also the unexplained ἐπίξηνον.Page in Frisk: 2,Greek-English etymological dictionary (Ελληνικά-Αγγλικά ετυμολογική λεξικό) > ξαίνω

98 ξυράω
ξυράω (ξύω ‘scrape’; Diod S 1, 83, 2; 1, 84, 2; 5, 28, 3; Plut., Mor. 180b; Dio Chrys. 16 [33], 63; Longus 4, 10, 1; Ath. 14, 2; PMich 243, 10 and 11 [I A.D.]), ξυρέω (Trag., Hdt., Pla. et al.; Lob. on Phryn. p. 205), ξύρω (Hippocr.; Plut., Mor. 336e τὴν κεφαλὴν ξυράμενος; Lucian, De Morte Peregr. 17) fut. 3 sg. ξυρήσει LXX; aor. 3 sg. ἐξύρησε LXX. Pass.: fut. ξυρηθήσομαι LXX; aor. inf. ξυρηθῆναι Lev 13:34; ‘to shave’. In our lit. the foll. verbal forms of the stem ξυρ-are found: mid.: ξύρωνται Ac 21:24 D; fut. ξυρήσονται 21:24; aor. subj. ξυρήσωνται ibid. v.l. Pass.: perf. ptc. ἐξυρημένος 1 Cor 11:5. In vs. 6 ξυρασθαι seems to be marked as a verbal form of ξυράω by ἐξυρημένῃ vs. 5, and in that case it is to be accented as a pres. mid. inf. ξυρᾶσθαι (cp. Diog. L. 7, 166 ξυρᾶσθαι=to have himself shaved; Jos., Ant. 19, 294 ξυρᾶσθαι and Bell. 2, 313 ξυρήσεσθαι; Philo, Spec. Leg. 1, 5 ξυρῶνται). On the other hand, the immediate proximity of κείρασθαι makes it much more likely that it is an aorist, an aor. mid. inf. of ξύρω, to be accented ξύρασθαι (other edd.; s. B-D-F §101 p. 47; Mlt-H. 200; 250; Anz 310f).—Mid. have oneself shaved (s. Schwyzer II 232; B-D-F §317; Rob. 809) τὴν κεφαλήν have one’s head shaved (Ps.-Callisth. 1, 3, 2; Num 6:9; Ezk 44:20) Ac 21:24 (s. on εὐχή 2 and Jos., Ant. 19, 294). Abs. 1 Cor 11:6. Pass. ἐξυρημένη a woman whose head is shaved vs. 5.—DELG s.v. ξύω. -
