1उद् ind. A prefix to verbs and nouns. G. M. gives the following senses with illustrations:- (1) Superiority in place, rank or power; up, upwards, upon, on, over, above (उद्बल). (2) Separation, disjunction उत्कञ्चुकः; out, out off, from, apart &c.; उद्गच्छति. (3) Motion upwards (उत्कन्धरः, उत्पताक, उत्तिष्ठति) पुरन्दर- श्रीः परमुत्पताकं प्रविश्य पौरैरभिनन्द्यमानः R.2.74. (4) acqui- sition, gain; उपार्जति. (5) Publicity; उच्चरति. (6) Won- der; anxiety; उत्सुक. (7) Liberation; उद्गत. (8) Ab- sence; उत्पथ. (9) Blowing, expanding, opening; उत्फुल्ल. (1) Pre-eminence; उद्दिष्ट. (11) Power; उत्साहः; उत् प्राबल्यवियोगोर्ध्वकर्मलाभप्रकाशाश्चर्यमोक्षणाभावदलप्राधान्यशक्तिषु. With nouns it forms adj. and adv. compounds; उदर्चिस्, उच्छिख, उद्बाहु, उन्निद्रम्, उत्पथम्, उद्दामम् &c. It is sometimes used in the Veda as an expletive simply to fill out the verse.2उद् = उन्द् q. v. -

[रुह्-क्तिन्]1 Growth, germination.-2 Birth, production.-3 Increase, devolopment, growth, spread.-4 Rise, ascent.-5 Fame, celebrity, notoriety; चक्रधर इति रथाङ्गमदः सततं बिभर्षि भुवनेषु रूढये Śi.15.26.-6 A tradition, custom, customary or traditional usage; शास्त्राद् रूढिर्बलीयसी 'custom prevails over precept',-7 General prevalence, common currency.-8 Popular meaning, conventional acceptation of a word; मुख्यार्थबाधे तद्योगे रूढितो$थ प्रयोजनात् K. P.2; समुदायशक्तिः रूढिः.-9 Decision.-Comp. -शब्दः a word which conveys its sense by रूढि (usage) as opposed to योग (etymology); बहुषु कुशानां लातुः गुणेषु सत्सु निपुणतायामेव कुशलशब्दो रोहाद् रूढिशब्द एव भवति ŚB. on MS.6.7.22.-शब्दता the state of being used in a conventional sense. -

(In addition to the five organs of perception,

i.e. eye, ear, nose, tongue, andᅠ skin, the Hindūs enumerate five organs of action, karmêndriyāṇi
i.e. larynx, hand, foot, anus, andᅠ parts of generation;
between these ten organs andᅠ the soul orᅠ ātman stands manas orᅠ mind, considered as an eleventh organ;
in the Vedānta, manas, buddhi, ahaṉkāra, andᅠ citta form the four inner orᅠ internal organs, antar-indriyāṇi, so that according to this reckoning the organs are fourteen in number, each being presided over by its own ruler orᅠ niyantṛi;

the tongue by Pracetas,
he skin by the Wind,
the voice by Fire,

buddhi by Brahman,
ahaṃkāra by Ṡiva,
citta by Vishnu as Acyuta;
in the Nyāya philosophy each organ is connected with its own peculiar element,
the nose with the Earth, the tongue with Water,
the eye with Light orᅠ Fire, the skin with Air, the ear with Ether;
the Jainas divide the whole creation into five sections, according to the number of organs attributed to each being.)

N. of a low range of hills connecting the Northern extremities of the Western andᅠ Eastern Ghauts, andᅠ separating Hindūstān proper from the Dekhan
(the Vindhya range is reckoned among the seven principal ranges of Bhārata-varsha < seeᅠ kulagiri>,
andᅠ according to Manu II, 21, forms the Southern limit of Madhya-deṡa orᅠ the middle region;
according to a legend related in MBh. III, 8782 etc.., the personified Vindhya, jealous of Himâlaya, demanded that the sun should revolve round him in the same way as about Meru, which the sun declining to do, the Vindhya then began to elevate himself that he might bar the progress of both sun andᅠ moon;
the gods alarmed, asked the aid of the saint Agastya, who approached the Vindhya andᅠ requested that by bending down he would afford him an easy passage to the South country, begging at the same time that he would retain a low position till his return;
this he promised to do, but Agastya never returned, andᅠ the Vindhya range consequently never attained the elevation of the Himâlaya) Mn. MBh. etc.;
