22 κάρδοπος
Grammatical information: f.Meaning: `kneading-trough' (Com., Pl., Hom. Epigr., Nic.; on the fem. gender cf. the instances in Schwyzer-Debrunner 34 n. 2; on the artificially rationalized καρδόπη [Ar. Nu. 678] ib. 28 n. 1).Derivatives: Diminut. καρδόπιον (Delos IIa); καρδοπεῖον `cover of a trough' (H.; cod. - ιον), also `muzzle' (Ar. Fr. 301).Origin: PG [a word of Pre-Greek origin]Etymology: No etymology. By Grošelj Ź̀iva Ant. 1, 125 explained it from κραδάω. Fur. 257 n. 38 suggests Hitt. harduppi, meaning uncertain. No doubt a Pre-Greek word.Page in Frisk: 1,788Greek-English etymological dictionary (Ελληνικά-Αγγλικά ετυμολογική λεξικό) > κάρδοπος

23 κόρδᾱξ
κόρδᾱξ, -ᾱκοςGrammatical information: m.Meaning: `name of a dance in the old comedy (Ar., Thphr.), also in the cult of Apollon (Amorgos) and Artemis (Sipylos, Elis; Paus. 6, 22, 1).Derivatives: Κορδάκα f. surn. of Artemis in Elis (Paus. l. c.), κορδακικός `κ.-like ' (Arist.), κορδακίζω `dance the κ.' (Hyp.) with - ισμός (D.), - ισμα (H.), - ιστής (Amorgos, pap.).Origin: PG [a word of Pre-Greek origin]Etymology: Doric word (Björck Alpha impurum 61) of uncertain origin. For comparison one adduces since long (s. Curtius 154) Skt. kūrdati `spring, skip' (Dravidian?; s. Mayrhofer KEWA s. v., Kuiper Sprachgesch. u. Wortbedeutung 244), further κραδάω, κραδαίνω, κράδη (s. v.) and σκορδινάομαι (s. v.); cf. on κορδύλη. - Against IE. origin Nehring Glotta 14, 185ff. - The ending -ᾱξ is typical of Pre-Greek.Page in Frisk: 1,917-918Greek-English etymological dictionary (Ελληνικά-Αγγλικά ετυμολογική λεξικό) > κόρδᾱξ

24 κορδύ̄λη
κορδύ̄ληGrammatical information: f.Meaning: `tumour, swelling' (Semon. 35, EM); name of a hairdress = Att. κρωβύλος (Kreon ap. Sch. Ar. Nu. 10, EM); `club, κορύνη, ῥόπαλον' (H.). (Frisk notes that the meaning is the same as that of τύλη, which is irrelevant.)Other forms: also σκορδύλη (Arist.) and κορύδῡλις (Numen. ap. Ath.).Compounds: as 1. member (with syllable-dissimilation) in κορδυ-βαλλῶδες ( πέδον, Luc. Trag. 222) `pavimentum'; `younger tunny' (Str., cordȳla Plin., Mart., cordula Apic.; on the meaning Thompson Fishes s. v.).Derivatives: Denomin. ptc. ἐγκεκορδυλημένος `εντετυλιγμένος, rolled in, together' (Ar. Nu. 10). Formation as κανθύλη, σχενδύλη (Chantraine Formation 251), but further unclear. - The meaning `younger tunny' can go back on `club', s. Strömberg Fischnamen 36; on the variant with σκ- Schwyzer 334; whether κορύδυλις has an anaptyctic υ (Strömberg l. c.) or from connection with κόρυς a. rel., is diff. to say.Origin: PG [a word of Pre-Greek origin]Etymology: On the meaning s. Bechtel Dial. 1, 450. Güntert Reimwortbildungen 117f. assumes a cross of κόνδυλος with κόρυς, κορυφή, κόρση, resp. with κορύνη; such proposals are mostly incorrect. The connection with κόρδαξ, κραδάω (since Curtius) is semantically in the air; a basic meaning "turned" for κορδύλη in the sense of `τύλη, `a hairdress' (WP. 2, 567) is no less arbitrary. Still diff. Persson Beiträge 1, 166 n. 4 (to κόρθυς etc.). - The prothetic σ- and the suffix -ῡλ-, and the anaptyctic υ (Fur. 384), point to Pre-Greek. It nay have κορδ- from *καρδ- with ο \< α.Page in Frisk: 1,918Greek-English etymological dictionary (Ελληνικά-Αγγλικά ετυμολογική λεξικό) > κορδύ̄λη

25 κρατευταί
Grammatical information: m. pl.Meaning: `stone or metal blocks on both sides of the altar on which the spits rested' (I 214, Eup., Att. inscr.; Chapouthier Rev. Ét. anc. 43, 12ff.); also `support of a pavement' (Lebadea).Other forms: κραδαυταί Att. inscr. (Solmsen KZ42, 221ff.).Origin: PG [a word of Pre-Greek origin]Etymology: The connection of Fick KZ 22, 230 with κράτος, κρατύς and τελευτή leads nowhere; cf. Aristarchus: ἀπὸ τοῦ διακρατεῖσθαι τοὺς ὀβελίσκους ἐπὶ τούτων ( τῶν βάσεων) κειμένους. Also an assumed verb κρατεύω = κρατύνω `make fest' (?) does not help. The rare by-form κραδευταί (Att. inscr.; cf. Solmsen KZ 42, 221 ff.) cannot be explained as folketymological transformation after κραδάω; the other way round does not give a solution either. Fur. 181 concludes rightly to a loan, with δ \/ τ, esp. as βασκευταί is also clearly a foreign loan.Page in Frisk: 2,8Greek-English etymological dictionary (Ελληνικά-Αγγλικά ετυμολογική λεξικό) > κρατευταί

26 πλαδαρός
Grammatical information: adj.Meaning: `damp, watery, spongy, soft, flaccid, tasteless' (Hp., A. R., Dsc.).Derivatives: πλαδαρ-ότης f. `flaccidity' (Epicur.), - όομαι `to become soft' (Aq.), - ωσις f. (medic.), - ωμα n. (Suid.). Besides πλαδάω `to be watery, soft' (Hp., Arist., Ph.) with - ησις f. (Sor.); also - ωσις f. (Aët.) as from *-όω; πλάδος m. `dampness, sponginess' with - ώδης (Hp.), - όεις (sch.); πλάδη f. `id.' (Emp.), perh. backformation from πλαδάω.Origin: PG [a word of Pre-Greek origin]X [probably]Etymology: Expressive words, to be found esp. in the medic. lit.. With πλαδ-αρός: - άω: - ος agree the semantically close rhiming words κλαδ-αρός: - άω: - ος, μαδ-αρός: - άω: - ος; thus ῥυπ-αρός: - άω: - ος a.o.; s. Chantraine Form. 227. The genetic relation of these forms remains unclear; cf. on κραδάω, κράδη. -- No agreements outside Greek; formally closest is a Balt. verb for `swim', e.g. Lith. példu (példžiu), peldė́ti. If on separates the d (cf. κλαδαρός: κλάω (?)) one may connect expressions for `pour, spill etc.' in Lith. pilù pìlti (with zero grade) and Arm. heɫum (* pel-nu-mi) a.o.; s. WP. 2, 54f. a. 66, Pok. 798f., Fraenkel s. vv. Earlier, dated attempts in Bq (also Specht Ursprung 171 a. 228). -- (Not to πλέω, πολύς). - The word can hardly be IE; is it Pre-Greek?Page in Frisk: 2,547-548Greek-English etymological dictionary (Ελληνικά-Αγγλικά ετυμολογική λεξικό) > πλαδαρός

27 σκαρδαμύσσω
Grammatical information: v,Meaning: `to blink, to twinkle' (Hp., E., X., Arist.).Derivatives: σκαρδαμ-ύκτης m. `blinker', - υκτικός `blinking' (Arist.), - υκτέω `to blink' (Luc., Porph.), - υγμός m. `the blinking' (Antyll. ap. Orib.). -- With α priv. ἀ-σκαρδάμ-υκτος, adv. - υκτί `not blinking, without blinking' (Ar., X, Luc. a. o.), - ύκτης `one who does not blink' (Hp.), - υκτέω (Sch.).Origin: PG [a word of Pre-Greek origin] (S)Etymology: Expressive-popular formation in - ύσσω (after ἀμαρ-, αἰθ-ύσσω? Debrunner IF 21, 242), first from a verbal noun, e.g. *σκαρδαμός (cf. on ῥαθάμιγξ). Further connection quite hypothetic: to σκαίρω, κραδάω as expression of a movement with convulsions? -- The word is no doubt of Pre-Greek origin.Page in Frisk: 2,720Greek-English etymological dictionary (Ελληνικά-Αγγλικά ετυμολογική λεξικό) > σκαρδαμύσσω

28 σκορδῐνάομαι
Grammatical information: v.Meaning: `to stretch (drowsily), to yawn' (Hp., Ar., Poll.).Other forms: Ion. - έομαι.Origin: XX [etym. unknown]Etymology: As to its meaning prob. iterative-intensive, σκορδινάομαι, - έομαι seems first to suppose a noun *σκόρδινον, - ος. A shorter form may be found in σκορδάζειν σπᾶσθαι H. Further dark; usually connected with κόρδαξ, κραδάω (s. vv.) [not very probable].Page in Frisk: 2,737-738Greek-English etymological dictionary (Ελληνικά-Αγγλικά ετυμολογική λεξικό) > σκορδῐνάομαι
