6 δατέομαι
Grammatical information: v.Meaning: `divide' (Il.; s. Leumann Hom. Wörter 281);Other forms: Aor. δάσ(σ)ασθαι, perf. δέδασμαι; from the aor new present δάσσω (Call. Fr. anon. 145).Derivatives: δατητής `divider' (A.), δατήριος `dividing' (A. Th. 711; haplol. for *δατητήριος), δάτησις (Poll.). - δασμός `distribution, tribute' (Il.; \< *δατ-σμός, Schwyzer 321 und 493), δάσμευσις `distribution' (X.), δάσματα μερίσματα H.; δαστήρ name of an official (Aetol.). - Lengthened present δατύσσειν λαφύσσειν, ἐσθίειν H., iterative preterite δασάσκετο (Ι 333).Etymology: No exact parallel. From the zero grade δᾰ- \< * dh₂- of δῆμος, δᾶμος. On the presentformation cf. πατέομαι and Schwyzer 705f. and 676. - Skt. dita- `divided' is an innovation of classiscal Sanskrit.Page in Frisk: 1,351-352Greek-English etymological dictionary (Ελληνικά-Αγγλικά ετυμολογική λεξικό) > δατέομαι

7 πάσσω
Grammatical information: v.Meaning: `to strew, to sprinkle' (Il.), also of figures on a cloth, `to embroider' (on the meaning Bowra JHSt. 54, 70 f., Wace AmJArch 52, 51 ff).Other forms: Att. (Ar.) πάττω, aor. πάσ-αι, - ασθαι, πασ-θῆναι (Att.), perf. midd. πέπασμαι (LXX, A. R.).Compounds: Very often w. prefix, e.g. κατα-, ἐπι- ( προ-επι-, παρ-επι-, προσ-επι-), ἐν- ( συν-εν-, παρ-εν-, προσ-εν-).Derivatives: πασ-τός `strewn, sprinkled' (Hp.), χρυσό-παστος `knitted, shot with gold' (A.), κατά-παστος `bestrewn, decorated (with figures)' (Ar.); subst. m. παστός `knitted curtain, blanket, bridal bed', also `bridal chamber' (hell.), cf. παστάς and Solmsen Wortforsch. 4 n. 2, IF 31, 485ff.; παστόω `to build a bridal chamber' (Aq.); ( κατά-, ἐπί-, διά-, σύμ-)πάσμα n. `(medicinal) powder' (Thphr., medic.); πάστρια f. `embroiderer' (sch.).Origin: XX [etym. unknown]Etymology: Beside πάσσω from *πάτ-ι̯ω stands πῆ-ν in πῆ καὶ πῆν ἐπὶ τοῦ κατάπασσε καὶ καταπάσσειν H.; to note esp. ἐπιπῆν φάρμακον (insc. Epid.) and ἐπι... φάρμακα πάσσεν (Ε 900). With πῆ-ν: *πάτ-ι̯ω one can compare: λή-θω: Lat. lăt-eō; Skt. dā́-ti `cut off', δᾶ-μος: δατ-έομαι (s.v. and δαίομαι, δῆμος); prob. also πῆ-μα: Lat. păt-ior; s. also on πατέομαι and Bechtel Lex. s.v. (w. older lit.). Here perh. also πήτεα πίτυρα, πητῖται πιτύρινοι ἄρτοι. Λάκωνες H. -- Further isolated. The connecttion with Lat. quatiō `shake' is both phonetically and semantically unconvincing; further combinations to be rejected in Bq, WP. 1, 511 and W.-Hofmann s. quatiō, all w. rich lit. Semantically good, but phonetically very uncertain is the comparison with Toch. AB kat-, kät- `strew' (s. v. Windekens Orbis 12, 464 w. lit.).Page in Frisk: 2,478Greek-English etymological dictionary (Ελληνικά-Αγγλικά ετυμολογική λεξικό) > πάσσω

Hebr. a.o.), to which ( περι-)ῥαντ-ισμός m. (LXX, NT), - ισμα n. (Vett.Val.); 3. ῥαντήρ, - ῆρος m. `sprinkler' (Nic.) with ( περι-, ἁπο-)ῥαντήριον n. `vessel with sprinkling water' (IA.); 4. ( περι-)ῥάντης m. `sprinkler' (pap.); 5. ( περί-)ῥανσις f. `sprinkling' (Pl., pap.); 6. ἀπό-ρ(ρ)ανθρον = ἀπορραντήριον (Anaphe, Priene); 7. ῥάσμα n. `sprinkling, spray' (hell.).Origin: PG [a word of Pre-Greek origin]Etymology: The above verbal system is based on ῥαν-, which, if inherited, represents the zero grade of IE *u̯ren- or * sren- (of which one would expect *u̯\/sr̥n-). Certain non-Gr. cognates are unknown. After Solmsen KZ 37, 590ff. to a Slav. verb for `let fall, shed' in Russ. ronítь, Czech. roniti, Pol. ronić a.o., which can go back on *u̯ron-, but may be explained diff. (WP. 1, 139, Pok. 329). Unclear is Hitt. ḫurnāi- `besprinkle' (Szemerényi KZ 73, 74). Who analyses the root as u̯r-en- or sr-en-, can locate the word in a wellknown surrounding. -- (Improb. is the connection with ῥαίνω (as *u̯rn̥-dh-, s. above) of ῥαθάμιγξ; s. v.) -- The variation δ\/ν is well known as a Pre-Greek phenomenon (Kuiper, FS Kretschmer 1, 216). This proves that the verb is Pre-Greek.Page in Frisk: 2,639-640Greek-English etymological dictionary (Ελληνικά-Αγγλικά ετυμολογική λεξικό) > ῥαίνω
