124 γουνός
Grammatical information: m.Derivatives: From Γόννος, *Γοῦνος perh. the name Γουνεύς Β 748, s. Boßhardt Nomina auf - ευς 111f. -Origin: PG [a word of Pre-Greek origin]Etymology: Compared with Thessal. PN Γόννος ( Γόννοι, Γοννοῦσσα), which suggests *γονϜος, but the development of - νϜ- is uncertain (Buck, Gr. Dial. $54). Since antiquity (EM) derived from γόνυ, which is improbable. The comparison with Russ. gumnó `threshing-floor' (Pisani, Rend. Acc. Lincei 6: 4, 359f.) is not convincing; s. Vasmer Russ. et. Wb. s. v. - Also γῶνος H. and χῶνος H., so clearly Pre-Greek. Fur. 138 further mentions material from Sardinia (Gonnos, Gonni), Berber, Basque and Caucasian.Page in Frisk: 1,322Greek-English etymological dictionary (Ελληνικά-Αγγλικά ετυμολογική λεξικό) > γουνός

126 πρόχνυ
Grammatical information: Adv.Meaning: `kneeling, on the knees' (Ι 570 πρόχνυ καθεζομένη), approx. `fully, thoroughly, entirely' (Φ 460, ξ 69 πρόχνυ ( ἀπ-)ολέσθαι; A. R. 1,1118; 2,249), meaning uncertain Antim. Col. 2 P.Origin: IE [Indo-European] [381] *ǵonu `knee'Etymology: In the meaning `kneeling' clearly from γόνυ with zero grade as in γνύξ a.o., so prop. "with the knees in front", frozen acc. n. for *πρό-γνυ = Skt. (gramm.) pra-jñú- meaning not quite certain (Wackernagel Unt. 74) with unclear aspiration, for which several explanations have been attempted (s. Schwyzer 328). The meaning `fully' v. t. must, if at all from `kneeling', come from reinterpretation of an ep. expression. For independent origin Brugmann -Thumb 127n.1, who, not very convincing, derived πρόχνυ `fully' from χναύω `plane, gnaw off'; an orig. *πρό-γνυ `kneeling' would have coalesced with it (accepted by Wackernagel l.c.). -- Details in Meringer WuS 11, 119f., Picard Rev. On the suffix combination - κρ- Chantraine Form. 225 w. n. 1, Schwyzer 496.Derivatives: Besides in H. also σαυχμόν σαχνόν, χαῦνον, σαθρόν, ἀσθενές (: Skt. sūkṣma- `fine, slender, thin, small' ?; cf. αὑχμός); with ψ-: ψαυκρός καλλωπιστής, ταχύς, ἐλαφρός, ἀραιός; ψαυκρὸν γόνυ κοῦφον, ψαυκρόποδα κουφόποδα; by H. folketymolog. connected with ἄκρος and ψαύειν.Origin: PG [a word of Pre-Greek origin]Etymology: Popular-expressive words without convincing connection; cf. σαῦλος, σαυνίον and σαύρα w. lit. -- The combination of σαυκρός and ψαυκρός (and σαυχμός, s.v. σαυκόν) shows that the word is Pre-Greek.Page in Frisk: 2,682Greek-English etymological dictionary (Ελληνικά-Αγγλικά ετυμολογική λεξικό) > σαυκρόν
