s. Geog. Distrito de la provincia de Calca, situado a 30 kms. de la ciudad del Qosqo, dentro del Valle Sagrado de los Incas, famoso por sus ruinas arqueológicas preinkas e inkas; con 7,496 habitantes en 1981. || Arqueol. Conjunto arqueológico que está conformado por estructuras arquitectónicas y de ingeniería, como son: recintos, templos, andenes, qolqas o depósitos para almacenar comestibles, intiwatana, sistemas hidráulicos, canteras, murallas, caminos, puentes y fuentes, etc. que en su mayoría son factura inka y algunos, sobre todo recintos, son Killki (800 d.C.) Además, alberga más de 4,000 tumbas, casi todas de la época inka. || Hist. A mediados del siglo XVI se conocía el valle, en su conjunto, como P'isaq y no el centro urbano inka que recién en los posteriores adoptó este nombre. Antes de que los Qheswas o Inkas conquistaran y sometieran al Señorío y los grupos étnicos de este valle y que su centro político religioso fuese el lugar que da asiento a la ciudad inka, estuvo poblado por los Kuyoq Marka o población movediza que era el centro y "cabeza de Kuyuqsuyu", integrado por varios grupos étnicos liderados por los curacas Kuyo Qhapaq, Ayankilalama y Apu Kunaraki. Con el Inka Pachakuleq se concretizó y consolidó finalmente la conquista y sometimiento real del valle. Sobre los restos de la antigua población de Kuyoq Marka se construyó la ciudad inka, diseñada y construida casi íntegramente por Pachakuteq por los años de 1440 d.C. El Estado Inka decidió establecer en este valle, uno de los primeros centros de producción maicera del Willkamayu, construyendo para tal propósito una completa estructura agrohidráulica, canales, reservorios, represas, andenes, depósitos, etc. La producción del maíz en gran cantidad permitió al Estado Inka contar con reservas importantes en los almacenes estatales, para el sostenimiento de un ejército cada vez más numeroso y organizado que fue decisivo para la formación, expansión y consolidación del Imperio del Tawantinsuyu. En los años posteriores P'isaq se convirtió en un gran centro administrativo, político y religioso. De igual manera fue la llave para el ingreso a la región de Pawkartanpu y Pillkupataen el Antisuyu, de suma importancia para la explotación de los productos selváticos como la coca, plumas, madera, etc. -

1916-1992Nacido el 14 de octubre de 1916 en New Haven, Connecticut, de padres rusos. La prosperidad familiar estuvo ligada al traslado a Nueva York, donde Arnold sintio despertar su vocacion teatral. Despues del derrumbe economico norteamericano de 1929 la familia quedo casi en la ruina, por lo que el joven Jack se determino, mas si cabe, a hacer carrera en el teatro. Su primera experiencia cinematografica fue curiosa: con una camara Kodak, modelo K, de 16 mm, filmo las obras de teatro en que no participaba, vendiendo copias a los actores. Durante la guerra, hizo un curso de cine en 1942, con objeto de presentarse en los Estudios Astoria de la Paramount pa ra optar al puesto de operador. Fue asignado a Ro bert Flaherty como asistente, con el que permanecio ocho meses. Despues de la guerra volvio a su trabajo teatral y, entre 1947 y 1949, rodo algunos cortos promocionales, antes de debutar en la realizacion de largometrajes con el filme de tono do cumental Whit These Hands (1950), sobre el mundo de la confeccion. El exito de la pelicula le abrio las puertas de la Universal, para la que rodaria, en primer lugar, la irrelevante Girls in the Night (1953). Entre 1953 y 1955 realizara otras cuatro peliculas, en el efimero sistema 3-D, que le permitiran ir afinando un estilo cinematografico propio, especialmente adecuado para producciones no demasiado costosas. Estuvo en la Uni versal hasta 1958, y despues, sin abandonarla del todo, dirigio peliculas para MGM, Paramount y otros estudios, hasta que, en 1976, despues del filme de accion Conspiracion en Suiza (The Swiss Cons piracy), se refugio en el medio televisivo. Estamos, sin lugar a dudas, ante uno de los grandes directores de la serie B, aunque serie B “de lujo”, con peliculas en su haber tan formidables como La mujer y el monstruo (Creature from the Black Lagoon, 1954), o The Incredible Shrinking Man (1957), no estrenada oficialmente en Espana pero conocida como El increible hombre menguante. 1887-1946Director de genero, especializado en productos de serie B, fue muy respetado en el ambiente de la profesion. Roland de Gostrie, ese era su verdadero nombre, era hijo de un capitan de barco irlandes y fue precisamente en el barco de su padre donde nacio. Inicialmente actor teatral, en 1915 ya en los Estados Unidos se convierte en ayudante de Thomas Ince. Desde 1916 dirige unos cuarenta filmes mudos. A la llegada del sonoro, realiza una pelicula para Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer, antes de firmar un contrato con Columbia, donde permanecera hasta mediados de los 30. Despues de una breve etapa en Inglaterra, realiza para la Universal un conjunto de doce peliculas que ponen en escena al celebre detective Sherlock Holmes, interpretado por Basil Rathbone, con Nigel Bruce como su inseparable doctor Watson. En esta serie brillo especialmente, lo mismo que en sus contribuciones a los generos de terror y fantastico. 100 Peckinpah, Sam
1925-1984Nacido en Madera, California, estudia la carrera de Derecho, que no llego a terminar, y se alista en el ejercito. Al terminar la Segunda Guerra Mundial, se empieza a interesar por el teatro. En la Universidad del Sur de California consigue culminar los estudios de Arte Dramatico y empieza su andadura teatral en Los Angeles. En 1949 es contratado por la cadena de television KLAC, donde recorrio toda la escala social de trabajos, que desembocaron en un contrato con la Allied Artists de Walter Wanger. El medio cinematografico en el que ahora se desarrolla su actividad le proporciona a Peckinpah, entre otras cosas, algunos amigos influyentes como el actor Joel McCrea o el director Charles Marquis Warren. Este le proporciona la oportunidad de escribir para la serie de television Gunsmoke; aquel sera uno de los dos protagonistas de su segunda pelicula, Duelo en la alta sierra. Llega a dirigir episodios televisivos antes de que la Fox le permita rodar su primer largometraje, que es un fracaso de publico y critica. No obstante, sus exitos televisivos le permiten obtener un contrato de Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer para rodar su segunda pelicula. Pero fue en el rodaje de la tercera, Mayor Dundee, en el que se iniciaria la maldicion que parecio pesar sobre los hombros de Peckinpah, que convertiria, en lo sucesivo, cada rodaje en una aventura que nunca se sabia si alcanzaria el exito. Por ejemplo, fue apartado de la direccion de El rey del juego (The Cincinnati Kid, Norman Jewison, 1965) que, con toda seguridad, el hubiera elevado a una altura de la que, por desgracia, carecio el filme en su estado definitivo, pese al magnifico guion que le sirvio de soporte. Saltando de productora a productora, incluso de pais a pais, ya que paso un par de anos en Gran Bretana, donde rueda Perros de paja (Straw Dogs, 1971), uno de sus filmes mas conocidos y apreciados, llega a conformar una esplendida filmografia que solo baja de nivel en sus ultimas peliculas. Sam Peckinpah es el maximo representante del western crepuscular. Su primera pelicula, The Deadly Companions, pertenece al genero, y a el dedico lo mejor de sus esfuerzos, radicalmente incomprendidos por parte de los productores. Duelo en la alta sierra es un filme de un vigor inusual, lleno de nostalgia, riguroso y bello como los paisajes por los que discurre. Mayor Dundee es la gran obra frustrada del director. En el estado en que la dejaron los responsables de Columbia sigue siendo una pelicula soberbia, esbozo de la obra definitiva que pudo llegar a ser. Grupo salvaje es la pelicula emblematica de Peckinpah. Todas las discusiones acerca del uso de la violencia en sus filmes arrancan de esta amarga reflexion sobre la vida y los seres humanos.
