L'événement le plus important fut la bataille de la Boyne en 1690 où le protestant Guillaume d'Orange l'emporta sur Jacques II, roi catholique déposé. Les orangistes sont farouchement attachés à la Couronne britannique et s'opposent à tout rapprochement avec la République d'Irlande. Organisés en loges, ils revendiquent chaque année ce qu'ils considèrent comme leur droit à défiler, même lorsque leurs parcours les conduisent dans des quartiers catholiques, ce qui donne souvent lieu à de violents affrontements. -
