To be in the limelight значит быть в центре внимания, быть объектом любви или восхищения. Limelights назывались так потому, что lime (окись кальция, или негашёная известь) был одним из главных компонентов процесса горения, который давал сильный, яркий свет, используемый в театрах для освещения с середины XIX в. С помощью a limelight (свет рампы) яркий луч света направлялся на главного героя на сцене, чтобы таким образом обратить на него особое внимание зрителей.
