Прилагательному скупой ('жадный') соответствуют английские greedy, avaricious, miserly, stingy, close-fisted и tight. Greedy имеет значение 'жадный, стремящийся захватить, получить как можно больше' и может взаимозаменяться с avaricious и miserly, причем miserly часто подразумевает ненасытное стремление к накоплению, стремление экономить на мелочах, отказывая себе в самом необходимом, и как результат – нужду, бедность. Ср. greedy person 'жадный человек', avaricious person 'скупой человек, скупой' (сущ.), miserly person (miser) 'скупец, скряга'. В предикативном употреблении greedy, в отличие от avaricious и miserly, может сочетаться с последующим существительным с предлогом for и приобретать метафорическое значение: to be greedy for fame (praise). Stingy (и более разговорные close-fisted и tight) подразумевает не столько стремление захватить, сколько удержать приобретенное богатство, деньги и пр. и употребляется только в буквальном значении в сочетании с существительным, обозначающим лицо: stingy (close-fisted, tight) old man.
