Однажды в воскресенье, на празднике, Фабиану садится играть в карты с полицейским и выигрывает. Полицейский сажает его в камеру, где Фабиану бьют. Выйдя на свободу, он вновь принимается за работу. Засуха и нищета свирепствуют снова. Жена убеждает Фабиану опять отправиться в путь. Перед уходом он вынужден убить больную собаку – к большому огорчению детей. Семья снова в дороге. Жена надеется, что их дети когда-нибудь станут свободными и не будут жить как бродячие звери. Фабиану в этом сомневается.► Удручающая картина нищеты на северо-востоке Бразилии с 1940-го по 1942 г. Засушливость климата и несправедливость гнетущей социальной системы в своем сочетании порождают настоящий ад (это слово не раз звучит из уст героев фильма, даже маленьких детей). Полагая, что его сюжет достаточно драматичен сам по себе, режиссер отказывается от дополнительной драматизации. Фильм также лишен всяких пластических экспериментов и поисков. К «новому кино» (Cinema Novo) он относится только своим социальным содержанием, но не разделяет эстетические принципы этого движения. Его сила – в максимально обнаженном и безыскусном документальном описании реальности. Эта сила очевидна с первых же минут, но затем немного теряется в длинной полнометражной картине. Иссушенные жизни неизменно фигурирует в списках лучших фильмов в истории национального кинематографа, составленных по результатам опросов среди бразильских кинокритиков.
