(в этом случае возможно употребление взаимного местоимения each other или one another - друг друга).The old man was off his pony in an instant, and they embraced as do father and son in the East — Старик мигом соскочил с пони, и они обнялись, как это делают отец и сын на Востоке.
2)а) В предложных группах в функции обстоятельства, как правило, употребляются не возвратные, а личные местоимения (особенно в случае, когда возможна только "возвратная" интерпретация).We saw a group of people behind us — Позади себя мы увидели группу людей.
He wants to take this book with him — Он хочет взять эту книгу с собой ( him не может относиться к кому-то другому).
б) Если выбор предлога определяется управлением глагола, то используется возвратное местоимение:Mary was pleased with herself — Мэри была довольна собой (при употреблении местоимения her можно было бы предположить, что Мэри довольна не собой, а кем-то другим).
3) После слов as, like, but (for) и except (for), а также в составе именных групп, состоящих из существительных, соединенных союзом and, вместо личных местоимений могут употребляться возвратные.I saw a figure like myself lying dressed in my clothes on a bed. — Я увидел человека, похожего на меня, лежащего в моей одежде на кровати.
When the service was over they went out of the room with their mother, and Mr Clare and himself were left alone — Когда служба была окончена, они вышли из комнаты вместе с матерью, и он остался наедине с г-ном Клэром.
4) Возвратные местоимения в английском языке могут также использоваться для выделения (в значении "сам").
