Разница между среднегодовым дивидендным доходом по акциям (equities) и среднегодовым доходом по долгосрочным золотообрезным ценным бумагам (gilt-edged securities). До 1960-х гг. доходы по акциям, как правило, превышали доходы по первоклассным ценным бумагам, отражая более высокую степень риска инвестиций в акции. В 1960-х гг. рост курса акций привел к падению дивидендного дохода, что породило обратный разрыв в доходности (reverse yield gap). Считалось, что акции обеспечивают большую защиту от инфляции (inflation) по сравнению с ценными бумагами с фиксированным процентом; таким образом, повышенный риск, присущий инвестициям в акции, компенсировался возможностью добиться более высокого прироста капитала.
