Гораздо важнее тот факт, что студия «Paramount», недовольная этой конструкцией, «искромсала» картину и сделала ее начало совершенно неразборчивым. И все-таки это незначительный дефект, если принять в расчет интерес, вызываемый фильмом. Единственный раз за все годы работы в кино Стёрджес берется за серьезный сюжет и раскрывает свою любимую тему, которую прежде часто замалчивал или облекал в комическую структуру из опасения наскучить публике. Это тема двойного поиска, который ведет человек, мечтающий добиться и материального, и духовного успеха.
