Стрелок проводит в Талле несколько дней, пытаясь разузнать путь через пустыню и что лежит за её краем. Минуя Талл, человек в чёрном воскрешает умершего пожирателя дьявольской травы Норта. Стрелок узнаёт эту историю от нимфоманки Элли, хозяйки салуна «У Шеба», которая взамен требует от Стрелка вступить с ней в связь. Шеб, тапёр-пианист в салуне и бывший сожитель Элли, делает неудачную попытку зарезать Роланда из ревности. Жители Талла находятся под влиянием полоумной сектантки Сильвии Питстон, которую человек в чёрном настроил против Стрелка. Перед самым уходом из города, жители, ведомые Шебом и Сильвией, набрасываются на Стрелка, и он расстреливает всех нападавших. Убитыми оказываются все жители Талла.Этимология названия городка, по словам самого автора, восходит к названию рок-группы: Jethro Tull.Anyway, from the dweller’s hut the story slips back another notch to you coming into the town of Tull… named after a rock group—” / “Jethro Tull,” Eddie said. “Goddam of course!
