6 -mezzo-
Ad esempio: È a due ore e mezzo da Roma, it's two and a half hours from Rome (non it's two hours and a half from Rome); Ho camminato per cinque kilometri e tre quarti, I walked for five and three-quarters kilometres. -
7 -never o ever?-
Nota d'usoGli avverbi never e ever possono essere tradotti entrambi con “mai”: never esprime una negazione, mentre ever implica una possibilità. In generale, never viene usato nelle frasi affermative ed ever nelle frasi interrogative. Inoltre, è possibile utilizzare never nelle frasi interrogative, quando si vuole esprimere sorpresa: Have you never been to Rome?, non sei mai stato a Roma? (in questo caso, si può anche usare ever con il verbo alla forma negativa: Haven't you ever been to Rome?). -
8 -to grow o to grow up?-
Nota d'usoBisogna fare attenzione a non confondere i verbi to grow e to grow up quando si vuole tradurre il verbo “crescere” in relazione alle persone. To grow, infatti, significa esclusivamente crescere di statura: You've grown!, sei cresciuto! Quando invece si intende “crescere” nel senso di diventare adulto, è necessario ricorrere al verbo frasale to grow up: I grew up in Rome, sono cresciuto a Roma (non I grew in Rome). -
