    Old Prussian:
    tresde `thrush'
    Indo-European reconstruction: trozd-o-
    Comments: In order to explain why * drozdъ was not, or rather only partly affected by the generalization of accentual mobilty in masculine o-stems, Illič-Svityč (1963: 45) reconstructs an u -stem, referring to OIc. ʮrǫstr < *-uz. I am inclined to consider the possibility that owing to the cluster - zd-, which prevented the Balto-Slavic retraction called Ebeling's law, *drozdъ belonged to a marginal oxytone type that in principle merged with AP (b). In that case it is no longer necessary to posit a u-stem. It must be said, by the way, that the evidence for AP (c) seems to outweigh the evidence for (c).
    Other cognates:
    Lat. turdus `thrush'
    ;
    OIr. truit `thrush' [f] \{2\};
    OIc. ʮrǫstr `thrush'
    Notes:
    \{1\} AP (c) in Old Russian (Zaliznjak 1985: 137). \{2\} OIr. also truid, druid.

    1 festival of San Fermín (held in Pamplona)
    * * *
    SANFERMINES The Sanfermines is a week-long festival starting on 7 July in Pamplona (Navarre) to honour San Fermín, the town's patron saint. One of its main events involves bulls and bullfighting. The bulls are led from their enclosure to the bullring early in the morning through the city's main streets; young men, dressed in traditional Navarrese red berets, white shirts and trousers with red sashes around their waists, run through the streets leading the fast-moving bulls. This activity, known as the encierro, in which people risk serious injury and even death, was popularized by writers such as Ernest Hemingway and now attracts visitors from all over the world. The festivities start with the txupinazo, a large rocket fired from Pamplona's main square, and for a full week Pamplona becomes one large street party punctuated by the daily encierro.

    The fiestas de San Fermín, Pamplona's patron saint, are the festival for which the Navarrese capital has become world-famous. It begins on July 6 with the txupinazo, the firing of a rocket in the main square. The bull-running, or encierro, starts at 8 a.m. the following day and takes place every day until July 14. The bulls that will fight that evening are released, and those who wish to, usually young men, run in front of them. Accidents are frequent.

    SANFERMINES
    The sanfermines of Pamplona, celebrations in honour of the local martyr Saint Fermín, are one of the most widely known of Spanish festivals, in no small part due to their being immortalized by Hemingway in “The Sun Also Rises” (1926). For a week on or around the feast of Saint Fermín (7 July) the people of Pamplona and visitors throw themselves wholeheartedly into non-stop celebration. The most eagerly awaited event, apart from the afternoon bullfights themselves, is the “encierro”, the legendary “running of the bulls” at daybreak, where bulls are let loose to run through the city streets on the way to the bullring, pursuing crowds of local and visiting men who try to outrun them. During the three minutes or so of the run there is constant danger that runners (especially inexperienced ones) might be injured, even fatally, and over the years there have been more than a dozen fatalities, and hundreds of runners have been gored. Yet the running of the bulls goes on year after year, offering a unique opportunity for those so inclined to test their nerve and swiftness of foot.

  • 72 κρημνός

    Grammatical information: m.
    Meaning: `overhanging bank' (Il.).
    Compounds: Often as 2. member, e.g. ἀπό-κρημνος `inclined, steep' (IA.), βαθύ-κρημνος `with steep inclination' (Pi.); extens. Strömberg Greek Preflx Studies 34 ff.; rarely as 1. member, e.g. κρημνο-φοβέομαι `be afraid of inclinations' (Hp.).
    Derivatives: κρημνώδης `slanting' (Th.); ( κατα- etc.) κρημνίζω `have a strong inclination' (Att. etc.), with - ισμός, - ισις (late).
    Origin: XX [etym. unknown]
    Etymology: Traditionally considered as an old verbal noun to κρεμάννυμι (s. v.) with ablaut κρημ-: κρεμα-; but this is impossible if the root was * kremh₂- (zero grade *kr̥mh₂- would give *κραμα-). DELG notes that the is proven by Pindar, which makes the case even worse: with h₂ we can never get . This recalls that there is no evidence for this root outside Greek. This reminds us that there is no explanation of κρίμνημι. Was there an old adj. *κριμνος `slanting'? Or was κρίμνημι just due to κίρνημι? The present κρήμνημι is rather influenced by κρημνός than the other way round. So the form is unexplained.

  • 73 Ackermann, Rudolph

    [br]
    b. 20 April 1764 Stolberg, Saxony
    d. 30 March 1834 Finchley, London, England
    [br]
    German-born fine-art publisher and bookseller, noted for his arrangement of the steering of the front wheels of horse-drawn carriages, which is still used in automobiles today.
    [br]
    Ackermann's father was a coachbuilder and harness-maker who in 1775 moved to Schneeberg. Rudolph was educated there and later entered his father's workshop for a short time. He visited Dresden, among other towns in Germany, and was resident in Paris for a short time, but eventually settled in London. For the first ten years of his life there he was employed in making designs for many of the leading coach builders. His steering-gear consisted of an arrangement of the track arms on the stub axles and their connection by the track rod in such a way that the inner wheel moved through a greater angle than the outer one, so giving approximately true rolling of the wheels in cornering. A necessary condition for this is that, in the plan view, the point of intersection of the axes of all the wheels must be at a point which always lies on the projection of the rear axle. In addition, the front wheels are inclined to bring the line of contact of the front wheels under the line of the pivots, about which they turn when cornering. This mechanism was not entirely new, having been proposed for windmill carriages in 1714 by Du Quet, but it was brought into prominence by Ackermann and so has come to bear his name.
    In 1801 he patented a method of rendering paper, cloth and other materials waterproof and set up a factory in Chelsea for that purpose. He was one of the first private persons to light his business premises with gas. He also devoted some time to a patent for movable carriage axles between 1818 and 1820. In 1805 he was put in charge of the preparation of the funeral car for Lord Nelson.
    Most of his life and endeavours were devoted to fine-art printing and publishing. He was responsible for the introduction into England of lithography as a fine art: it had first been introduced as a mechanical process in 1801, but was mainly used for copying until Ackermann took it up in 1817, setting up a press and engaging the services of a number of prominent artists, including W.H.Pyne, W.Combe, Pugin and Thomas Rowlandson. In 1819 he published an English translation of J.A.Senefelder's A Complete Course of Lithography, illustrated with lithographic plates from his press. He was much involved in charitable works for widows, children and wounded soldiers after the war of 1814. In 1830 he suffered "an attack of paralysis" which left him unable to continue in business. He died four years later and was buried at St Clement Danes.

  • 74 Klic, Karol (Klietsch, Karl)

    [br]
    b. 31 May 1841 Arnau, Bohemia (now Czech Republic)
    d. 16 November 1826 Vienna, Austria
    [br]
    Czech inventor of photogravure and rotogravure.
    [br]
    Klic, sometimes known by the germanized form of his name Karl Klietsch, gained a knowledge of chemistry from his chemist father. However, he inclined towards the arts, preferring to mix paints rather than chemicals, and he trained in art at the Academy of Painting in Prague. His father thought to combine the chemical with the artistic by setting up his son in a photographic studio in Brno, but the arts won and in 1867 Klic moved to Vienna to practise as an illustrator and caricaturist. He also acquired skill as an etcher, and this led him to print works of art reproduced by photography by means of an intaglio process. He perfected the process c.1878 and, through it, Vienna became for a while the world centre for high-quality art reproductions. The prints were made by hand from flat plates, but Klic then proposed that the images should be etched onto power-driven cylinders. He found little support for rotary gravure, or rotogravure, on the European continent, but learning that Storey Brothers, textile printers of Lancaster, England, were working in a similar direction, he went there in 1890 to perfect his idea. Rotogravure printing on textiles began in 1893. They then turned to printing art reproductions on paper by rotogravure and in 1895 formed the Rembrandt Intaglio Printing Company. Their photogra-vures attracted worldwide attention when they appeared in the Magazine of Art. Klic saw photogravure as a small-scale medium for the art lover and not for mass-circulation publications, so he did not patent his invention and thought to control it by secrecy. That had the usual result, however, and knowledge of the process leaked out from Storey's, spreading to other countries in Europe and, from 1903, to the USA. Klic lived on in a modest way in Vienna, his later years troubled by failing sight. He hardly earned the credit for the invention, let alone the fortune reaped by others who used, and still use, photogravure for printing long runs of copy such as newspaper colour supplements.
