Another change of career in 1951 saw him working as a Technical Officer with the National Research and Development Corporation, where he was involved in computer software and hardware design. From 1958 until 1962 he was an independent consultant in computer design, and during this time (1959) he realized that as mainframe computers were by then much faster than their human operators, their efficiency could be significantly increased by "time-sharing" the tasks of several operators in rapid succession. Strachey made many contributions to computer technology, being variously involved in the design of the Manchester University MkI, Elliot and Ferranti Pegasus computers. In 1962 he joined Cambridge University Mathematics Laboratory as a senior research fellow at Churchill College and helped to develop the programming language CPL. After a brief period as Visiting Lecturer at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, he returned to the UK in 1966 as Reader in Computation and Fellow of Wolfeon College, Oxford, to establish a programming research group. He remained there until his death.[br]Principal Honours and DistinctionsDistinguished Fellow of the British Computer Society 1972.Bibliography1961, with M.R.Wilkes, "Some proposals for improving the efficiency of Algol 60", Communications of the ACM 4:488.1966, "Systems analysis and programming", Scientific American 25:112. 1976, with R.E.Milne, A Theory of Programming Language Semantics.
•• New Oxford Dictionary, относящий происхождение этого слова ( a deliberate respelling of light) к 50-м годам прошлого века, предлагает следующие толкования: lite – adjective denoting a low-fat or lowsugar version of a manufactured food or drink product: lite beer. N. Amer. informal denoting a simpler or less challenging version of a particular thing or person: I am the happy feminist who likes men, the feminist lite.
In the National Interest):
•• While the opposition Communists took nearly 13 percent of the vote, 9 percent of the electorate defected to the newly formed Rodina, or Motherland bloc, a “ communist-lite” faction that made it clear it would be prepared to work constructively with the Kremlin.
•• Вот еще одно определение lite (American Heritage Dictionary): Slang: Having less substance or weight or fewer calories than something else: “lite music, shimmering on the surface and squishy soft at the core” (Mother Jones).
•• Though they openly embraced Leninism, Rivera biographer Bertram Wolfe noted that their communist-lite leanings were likely the result of naïve café conversations during Rivera’s stint in France with Picasso and other shapers of the Parisian Cubist movement.
•• The Citizens for Tax Justice as her reference is a tip off they are a “ Progressive” ( read communist lite) group.
•• Donald Rumsfeld has articulated a strategy of nation-building “ lite,” involving a rapid transition to local control and a tough-love policy that leaves locals to find their own way toward good government and democracy. <...> Nation-building “ lite” risks being used as an intellectual justification for getting out, regardless of the mess we leave behind.
•• [The Philippines’] participation in the Bush administration’s coalition of the willing would have to be described as “commitment lite.” (Pittsburgh Post-Gazette)
Ф. Washington Post:
•• Ralph Nader must be smiling, in his dour way, now that Dean is saying Kerry is a “ Republican,” “ Bush Lite,” “ no different” than Bush in being “ a handmaiden to special interests,” is making “ crazy” promises of tax cuts and spending increases, and is “ a Washington insider who shifts back and forth with every poll,” exemplifying “exactly what’s wrong with American politics.”

37 Petty, Sir William
SUBJECT AREA: Medical technology[br]b. 26 May 1623 Romsey, Hampshire, Englandd. 16 December 1687 London, England[br]English scientist, medical practitioner, researcher and founder member of the Royal Society of London.[br]Despite coming from modest circumstances, Petty had an illustrious career, which started with college in France at the age of 13, followed by service on a small coastal ship and then studies at the medical schools of Ley den and Paris. In 1651 he was appointed Professor of Anatomy at Oxford, and by this time was attending meetings of fellow scientists and philosophers which culminated in the founding of the Royal Society of London for Improving Natural Knowledge. In 1652 Petty was sent to Ireland as PhysicianGeneral for the Army; he was soon involved in many matters of an intellectual and experimental nature. He took responsibility for the first proper survey of the country and produced maps and an Irish atlas, Hiberniae Delineatio, published in 1685. His investigations into political economics had a profound effect on seventeenth-century thinking. Of equal importance were his radical proposals for ship design; he presented many papers on naval architecture to the Royal Society and at one time suggested floating harbours similar to the Mulberry harbours of nearly three centuries later. In 1662 he built the pioneer catamaran Invention II (described at the time as a double-bottomed ship!), which was capable of lifting 5 tons of cargo.[br]Principal Honours and DistinctionsKnighted 1661.Further ReadingP.G.Dale, 1987, Sir W.P. of Romsey, Romsey: LTVAS Group.FMW -
