Islas is the only Spanish source to reference this term, but he does not concur. He states that it may refer to a protective piece of leather tied on the right leg and fastened at the waist to keep the reata (rope) from rubbing or chafing. Alternately, it refers to a piece of leather attached to the loop of the rope itself for a similar purpose.
