1 מַכְסִי׳ m. pl. (כסר, cmp. Arab. kasar and denom.) division, settlement of shares (cmp. מֶכֶס). Ylamd. to Num. 23:10, quot. in Ar. לכשתטול את שלך ותעשה המ׳וכ׳ when thou (Balaam) takest thy share and makest a settlement, thou shalt agree with (or thank) me. (Ar. refers to אַכְסָרָה.

שְׁכוּנָהf. (preced.) 1) settlement, colony, group of dwellings. Ab. Zar.21a ובלבד שלא יעשנה ש׳ provided that (in selling dwellings to a gentile) he does not make it a (gentile) settlement; ib. אין ש׳וכ׳ a settlement consists of no less than three men (living in a group). Gitt.6a מש׳ לש׳ when the deed of divorce is carried from one group of buildings to another; Y. ib. I, 43c top. Gen. R. s. 39 וממולדתך זו שְׁכוּנָתְךָ ‘and out of thy moledeth (Gen. 12:1) this means, thy settlement. Ib. s. 64, v. נָצִיב; a. e.Lev. אַפּוּכִי(אוּפְכִי, אִיפּוּכִי) f. ( אפך, הפך v. cmp. חליפין) return, exchange, equivalent, settlement (cmp. esp. Targ. Prov. 24:29, a. P. Sm. s. v. הפך). Lev. R. s. 34, end א׳ דידה הן היא (Yalk. Lev. 665 אִיפּוּכִין, pl.) where is the equivalent for the money spent? Ib. and of all those (praised for their deeds with ashré) לא נטל א׳ אלא זה (Yal. l. c. איפוכין) none received the promise of an equivalent except this (Ps. 41:2). Gen. Ib. 47a אין הבוצע רשאי לִבְצוֹעַוכ׳ he who is chosen to break the bread, must not begin to break until the Amen of those that respond (to the blessing) is finished; a. fr. 2) to split the difference, to adjust, compromise. Snh.6b top נגמר … לבצוע after the legal proceedings are closed, thou must not act as an arbiter in a compromise.
