1899-1964Nacido Samuel Neufeld, hermano de Sigmund Neufeld, futuro jefe de produccion de PRC, dirige cortometrajes desde 1926, y largometrajes desde 1933. Probablemente el mas prolifico realizador norteamericano de la era sonora, dirigio, sobre todo, westerns. Por sus manos paso una parte importante de los viejos heroes del genero, en peliculas de una hora de duracion y argumentos eternamente repetidos. Solo leer su filmografia produce cierto vertigo. Establecerla rigurosamente es una tarea ardua, especialmente en lo relativo al orden cronologico estricto, por lo que en esta ocasion mas que en ninguna otra hay que entender que ese orden es susceptible de correccion. Utiliza los seudonimos de Peter Stewart y Sherman Scott. Se ha prescindido de tres aparentes largometrajes, situados al final de su carrera y obtenidos, cada uno de ellos, por super posicion de dos episodios del serial televisivo “Hawkeye and the Last of the Mohicans”. 1925-1984Nacido en Madera, California, estudia la carrera de Derecho, que no llego a terminar, y se alista en el ejercito. Al terminar la Segunda Guerra Mundial, se empieza a interesar por el teatro. En la Universidad del Sur de California consigue culminar los estudios de Arte Dramatico y empieza su andadura teatral en Los Angeles. En 1949 es contratado por la cadena de television KLAC, donde recorrio toda la escala social de trabajos, que desembocaron en un contrato con la Allied Artists de Walter Wanger. El medio cinematografico en el que ahora se desarrolla su actividad le proporciona a Peckinpah, entre otras cosas, algunos amigos influyentes como el actor Joel McCrea o el director Charles Marquis Warren. Este le proporciona la oportunidad de escribir para la serie de television Gunsmoke; aquel sera uno de los dos protagonistas de su segunda pelicula, Duelo en la alta sierra. Llega a dirigir episodios televisivos antes de que la Fox le permita rodar su primer largometraje, que es un fracaso de publico y critica. No obstante, sus exitos televisivos le permiten obtener un contrato de Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer para rodar su segunda pelicula. Pero fue en el rodaje de la tercera, Mayor Dundee, en el que se iniciaria la maldicion que parecio pesar sobre los hombros de Peckinpah, que convertiria, en lo sucesivo, cada rodaje en una aventura que nunca se sabia si alcanzaria el exito. Por ejemplo, fue apartado de la direccion de El rey del juego (The Cincinnati Kid, Norman Jewison, 1965) que, con toda seguridad, el hubiera elevado a una altura de la que, por desgracia, carecio el filme en su estado definitivo, pese al magnifico guion que le sirvio de soporte. Saltando de productora a productora, incluso de pais a pais, ya que paso un par de anos en Gran Bretana, donde rueda Perros de paja (Straw Dogs, 1971), uno de sus filmes mas conocidos y apreciados, llega a conformar una esplendida filmografia que solo baja de nivel en sus ultimas peliculas. Sam Peckinpah es el maximo representante del western crepuscular. Su primera pelicula, The Deadly Companions, pertenece al genero, y a el dedico lo mejor de sus esfuerzos, radicalmente incomprendidos por parte de los productores. Duelo en la alta sierra es un filme de un vigor inusual, lleno de nostalgia, riguroso y bello como los paisajes por los que discurre. Mayor Dundee es la gran obra frustrada del director. En el estado en que la dejaron los responsables de Columbia sigue siendo una pelicula soberbia, esbozo de la obra definitiva que pudo llegar a ser. Grupo salvaje es la pelicula emblematica de Peckinpah. Todas las discusiones acerca del uso de la violencia en sus filmes arrancan de esta amarga reflexion sobre la vida y los seres humanos. 1883-1949Desde 1920 hasta su fallecimiento, dirige un buen punado de peliculas de genero que hicieron de el un realizador razonablemente popular y con algunos exitos en su haber. Fue el director de algunos de los mejores filmes de los inefables Hermanos Marx, como Una noche en la opera (A Night at the Opera, 1935) y Un dia en las carreras (A Day at the Races, 1937), pero tambien se deben a el peliculas como Adios, mister Chips (Goodby, Mr. Chips, 1939) o Espejismo de amor (Kitty Foyle, 1940), por el que Ginger Rogers conquisto un Oscar. Wood, cuyas opiniones politicas lo acercan a la extrema derecha, no fue, sin embargo, un hombre especialmente creativo, ni sus westerns merecen una atencion singularizada. 1894-1965Entre 1917 y 1955 trabajo en infinidad de filmes de diversos generos, especialmente westerns, con rapidez y economia. Fue de todo: especialista, actor, productor, guionista, ayudante de direccion y director. Se recuerda su trabajo de realizacion, a comienzos de los 30, en cuatro peliculas Warner Bros protagonizadas por un joven John Wayne. Hizo, ademas, otras cuatro peliculas con el cowboy-cantante Gene Autry, otras tantas de la serie “The Three Meskiteers” con el trio Robert Livingston, Ray Corrigan y Max Terhune, y dos seriales, uno en colaboracion con Ray Taylor, y el otro con Sam Nelson. Fueron, en total, 26 films, rodados entre 1920 y 1947. Mas tarde, volvio a ser ayudante de direccion y supervisor de produccion de peliculas de serie B, particularmente con el realizador W.
