  • 3 Ray, Nicholas

    1911-1979
       Nacido en Galasville, Wisconsin, despues de diversas vicisitudes academicas se une a un grupo de teatro neoyorquino. En el conoce a Elia Kazan, del que se convierte en ayudante para su primera pelicula, Lazos humanos (A Tree Grows in Brooklyn, 1945).
       Empieza a dirigir en 1948. Nicholas Ray es, sin duda, uno de los directores norteamericanos mas importantes del siglo XX. De acusada personalidad, sus peliculas desprenden un intenso lirismo, con independencia del genero en el que se inscriban. Pro bablemente la mas famosa de ellas sea Rebelde sin causa (Rebel without a Cause, 1955), prevista inicialmente para Sidney Lumet con Marlon Brando como protagonista, lugar este ultimo que ocupo en definitiva James Dean. Los problemas de Ray con los productores se fueron acentuando a medida que avanzaba su carrera, lo que, unido a sus problemas personales, termino convirtiendolo en alcoholico y jugador compulsivo. La pelicula Relampago sobre el agua (Lightning Over Water, 1980), realizada con la ayuda de Wim Wenders, muestra con todo su patetismo la agonia del realizador, muerto en 1979, antes del estreno del filme. Los cuatro westerns dirigidos por Ray (el primero de ellos un ejemplo, sin duda, atipico del genero) se pueden calificar como westerns romanticos, en los que sentimientos como el amor fou, o la amistad, modelan el contenido del discurso. Johnny Guitar es, sin duda, uno de los grandes westerns de todos los tiempos.

    1894-1975
       El nombre de Joseph Kane se asocia de forma indisoluble a una productora, Republic, de principio a fin. Kane habia dirigido en 1935 un serial para Mascot, que junto con otras pequenas productoras se asociaron para fundar Republic ese mismo ano. Desde esa fecha hasta 1958, en que la productora desaparece, Kane es uno de sus directores mas prolificos. Estamos ante uno de los grandes nombres del western, en cantidad, ya que no en calidad. Entre 1934 y 1975 trabaja en no menos de 120 peliculas, la inmensa mayoria de las cuales pertenecen al genero que nos ocupa. Trabaja con Gene Autry, John Wayne, Robert Livingston, Roy Rogers, Bill Elliott, en tre otros. Despues dirigira algunos episodios de se ries de television y otras cuatro peliculas. Sus mejores filmes son, sin duda, Titanes de la montana y Los indomables, ya al final de su carrera.
