No etymology. Acc. to Haupt Actes du 16. congr. des orient. (1912) 84f. from Assyr. pûlu `shell-lime'. With πωρεῖν κηδεύειν, πενθεῖν, πωρῆσαι λυπῆσαι H. and πωρητύς f. `pain' (Antim.) no connection seems possible.
