2 -might o may?-
O con maggior cautela: Might we sit down? May (ma non might) si usa anche in espressioni benauguranti formali: May the married couple be very happy! possano gli sposi essere felici! -

6 -triple o treble?-
Nota d'usoI verbi to treble e to triple sono sinonimi e significano “moltiplicare per tre”: Fees will treble ( o triple) in the New Year, le tasse triplicheranno con il nuovo anno. -
7 -who o whom?-
Nota d'usoLa regola tradizionale è che who è un pronome soggetto, mentre whom è pronome complemento oggetto e indiretto: the woman who came to dinner last night, la donna che è venuta a cena ieri sera; He's a man whom people find they can talk to easily, è un uomo a cui la gente pensa si possa parlare con facilità. Però l'uso di who al posto di whom è molto diffuso nel parlato, soprattutto nelle domande, e in contesti non formali: Who are you looking for? chi stai cercando? Però si tratta di una regola molto controversa e contestata: la forma alternativa (Who was the report intended for?) è largamente accettata. -

17 -antique o ancient?-
18 -assassin, assassination, to assassinate-
Nota d'usoAssassin e to assassinate significano “assassino” e “assassinare”, però nell'inglese moderno si usano solo in riferimento all'assassinio di un personaggio di un certo rilievo per motivi politici o religiosi: Benazir Bhutto has been assassinated, Benazir Bhutto è stata assassinata; the attempted assassination of the Pope, il tentato assassinio del Papa. In altri contesti si usano murder, murderer e derivati.English-Italian dictionary > -assassin, assassination, to assassinate-

19 -at the school o at school?-
(non Have you got an auto?).
