Dor. τέθᾱλα (Il.); later forms aor. 1 ἀν-έθηλα (Ael.), fut. ἀνα-θᾰλήσομαι (AP),Compounds: also with prefix ( ἀνα- a. o.)Derivatives: 1. From the root aorist: θάλος n. `sprout', only metaph. (Il.) with ἀμφι-θαλής `surrounded by θάλος (θάλεα), rich' (Χ 496; also to θαλεῖν); adj. f. θάλεια `flowering, rich' (Il.; on the accent cf. ἐλάχεια, s. ἐλαχύς), m. n. *θαλύς, -ύ only in gen. pl. θαλέων (Χ 504); for it (Il.) θαλερός (as γλυκερός to γλυκύς). θαλία, - ίη `flower, abundance', pl. `feast' (Il., Hdt.; cf. Scheller Oxytonierung 39 w. diff. analysis) with θαλιάζω `amuse oneself' (Plu.). PN Θάλης (- ῆς), gen. Θάλεω, Θάλητος etc.. (Schwyzer 461f.). On θαλύσια s. v. 2. From the present: θαλλός m. `green twig, esp. of the olive, sprout', also `(festive) gift' (ρ 224) with θαλλία f. sg. `foliage' (Thphr.), θαλλία n. pl. `gifts' (pap.), θάλλῐνος `consisting of θαλλοι' (Rhodes). Θαλλώ f. `goddess of Growth' (Iusi. ap. Lykurg. 77, Paus. 9, 35, 2). - Sec. presents. 1. to the root aorist: θᾰλ-έθω (Il.; s. Chantraine Gramm. hom. 1, 327, Shipp Studies 39). 2. to the perfect: θηλέω, θᾱλέω, aor. θηλῆσαι, θᾱλ- (Il.) with ἐρι-θηλής `richly growing' (Il., Hes.) etc. (but ἐριθαλίς εἶδος δένδρου H., erithales n. Plin. to θάλος). From θηλέω lengthened: τηλεθάω, old only Ptc. τηλεθάων (Il.; Chantraine Gramm. hom. 1, 359).Etymology: A certain agreement to this richly developped family only in Albanian and Armenian with the present Alb. dal `sprout' \< IE * dhal-nō, which can even be identical with θάλλω (*θαλ-ι̯ω is also possible; cf. on βάλλω), the aor. dol(l)a (IE * dhāl- as τέ-θᾱλ-α) and Arm. adj. dalar `green, fresh', which one compares with θαλερός. 111 κλαγγή
Grammatical information: f.Other forms: Dat. also κλαγγ-ί (Ibyc. 56; s. below)Derivatives: κλαγγηδόν `with crying' (Β 463; Haas Μνήμης χάριν 1, 133), κλαγγώδης `full of sound, shrill' (Hp., Gal.). Besides κλάζω, also with prefix, e. g. ἀνα-, ἐκ-, aor. κλάγξαι `sound, resound, cry' (Il.), also κλαγεῖν (B. 16, 127, h. Hom. 19, 14, E. u. a.), fut. κλάγξω (A.), perf. κεκλήγοντες (Aeolising) and κεκληγώς, - ῶτες (Hom.; Schwyzer 540 n. 4, Chantraine Gramm. hom. 1, 430f.), κέκλᾱγα (Alcm. 7), κέκλαγγα (Ar., X.), perfect future κεκλάγξομαι (Ar.).Origin: PG [a word of Pre-Greek origin]Etymology: Isolated presents: κλαγγαίνω (A. Eu. 131), - άνω (S.), - έω (Theoc. Ep. 6, 5), - άζω (Poll., Porph.). - To κλαγεῖν: κλαγερός `crying' (AP). As yot-present κλάζω may come from *κλάγγ-ι̯ω from a root noun κλάγγ-, which is seen in κλαγγ-ί (or innovation?); but it could also be a primary nasal present, with - ζω from the sound-verbs ( ὀλολύζω, οἰμώζω a. o.; cf. Schwyzer 716). The non-present forms κλάγξαι, κλάγξω, κέκλαγγα are anyhow innovations. In function κλαγγ-ή is a verbal noun (cf. Porzig Satzinhalte 11f.). In κλαγεῖν and κέκληγα original primary nasalless forms may have been preserved, but analogical innovation with loss of the nsal is not impossible (Leumann Celtica 3, 248). - A direct comparison (except for - ζω) is Lat. clangō `cry' (almost only present), with which OIc. hlakka `cry' (with assimilation nk \> kk) may agree. The words belong to a widespread group of soundword (but καλεῖν and κέλαδος do not belong here; cf. the material in Bq, Pok. 599f., W.-Hofmann s. clangō. Note that an IE * klag- is impossible (* klh₂g- wouldhave given in Greek *κλᾱγ-; a form * klh₂eng- gives *καλαγγ-). Schwyzer 692 assumes expressive nasalization, but this does not help as *κλαγ- cannot be generated. Cf. Fur. 274. Is the basic form Pre-Greek?See also: - S. auch κλώζω.Page in Frisk: 1,863-864Greek-English etymological dictionary (Ελληνικά-Αγγλικά ετυμολογική λεξικό) > κλαγγή

112 lá
1 adv. no, not" LA, VT45:25 According to VT42:33, lá is the stressed form, alternating with la when the negation is unstressed. In another conceptual phase of Tolkien's, lá had the opposite meaning "yes" VT42:32-33, but this idea is contradicted by both earlier and later material: usually lá is conceived as a negation. The negation can receive tense markers and be used as a negative verb when another verb is not expressed VT49:13, apparently where the phrase is not is followed by a noun or an adjective as a predicate, or where some verb is understood, as in English I do not i.e. I do not do whatever the context indicates. With pronominal endings la- in the aorist, e.g. lanyë I do not, am not etc. Tolkien abandoned the form lamin. Exemplified in the sentence melin sé apa ulanyë/u hé *I love him but uI do not love/u him another person VT49:15. Present tense laia, past lánë, perfect alaië, future lauva. 2 prep. athwart, over, across, beyond PE17:65, also used in phrases of comparison, e.g. "A ná calima lá B", A is bright beyond = brighter than B VT42:32. 3 interjection? "please" reading of gloss uncertain VT45:25 -

This required the production of a photographic emulsion that was effectively grainless: the individual silver halide crystals had to be smaller than the shortest wavelength of light to be recorded. Lippman succeeded in this and in 1891 demonstrated his process. A glass plate was coated with a grainless emulsion and held in a special plate-holder, glass towards the lens. The back of the holder was filled with mercury, which provided a perfect reflector when in contact with the emulsion. The standing waves produced during the exposure formed laminae in the emulsion, with the number of laminae being determined by the wavelength of the incoming light at each point on the image. When the processed plate was viewed under the correct lighting conditions, a theoretically exact reproduction of the colours of the original subject could be seen. However, the Lippman process remained a beautiful scientific demonstration only, since the ultra-fine-grain emulsion was very slow, requiring exposure times of over 10,000 times that of conventional negative material. Any method of increasing the speed of the emulsion also increased the grain size and destroyed the conditions required for the process to work.[br]Principal Honours and DistinctionsRoyal Photographic Society Progress Medal 1897.
