A loose garment, with a hood, worn by the Romans over the toga, open in front and fastened by a buckle under the throat or on the right shoulder. Usually of a dark colour and worn as a protection in bad weather but in the earlier times exclusively as a military garment (see also Abolla, Pasnula and Pallium) -
87 Stola
A robe worn by Roman women, and was the characteristic dress of the Roman matron, as the toga was of the men. It was worn over the tunic, and came as low as the feet, being fastened round the body by a girdle. It had long or short sleeves, also a flounce sewn to the bottom. The pallium was thrown over it, and brought over the head when walking, or in winter. -
