3 baccalauréat
baccalauréat [bakalɔʀea]masculine nounb. (au Canada = licence) ≈ BA━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━The bac, as it is popularly known, is the school leaving examination all French « lycée » students take in their final year. Before beginning their baccalauréat studies, pupils choose a specialization known as a « série », represented by an initial letter: a bac with a scientific bias is known as a « bac S » (for « scientifique ») while an arts-oriented bac is referred to as a « bac L » (for « littéraire »), for example. When the word bac is followed by a plus sign and a number, this refers to the number of years of formal study completed since obtaining the baccalauréat qualification: « bac + 3 » refers to the « licence » or equivalent, « bac + 4 » to the « maîtrise » etc. These abbreviations are often used in job advertisements to indicate the level of qualification required.* * *known informally as the bac, is an examination sat in the final year of the lycée ( la terminale), so usually at age 17 or 18. 11 Agrégation
, AgrégéThe Agrégation is a competitive exam for the recruitment of a privileged category of secondary-school (high school) teachers in France, known as agrégés. The system was first introduced in 1766. The exam is open to candidates who are either already qualified secondary teachers, or else students who have already completed at least one year of postgraduate studies (a maîtrise or the first year of a masters). Each year, a number of places are made available in each of the subjects for which an Agrégation exists. There are always far more candidates than places, since obtaining the agrégation puts teachers or future teachers on the fast track to promotion, gives them less teaching hours than ordinary qualified teachers, better chances of getting a job in a top lycée, and in some though not all cases is a virtual prerequisite for applying for lectureships in French universities. Though the agrégation is specifically a qualification for the teaching profession, the competitive exam itself has little or nothing to do with teaching, being academic and research-based. Consequently, the system has been regularly criticized from within the teaching world as being outdated and inappropriate. In the disciplines of law and medicine, the agrégation is specifically a competitive exam for the qualification of university professors.Dictionnaire Français-Anglais. 12 Intermittents du Spectacle
People working intermittently in the media and culture sector, including part-time actors, stage hands and technicians. At the start of the twenty-first century, les Intermittents du Spectaclebenefited from extremely attractive conditions for obtaining unemployment benefit - far less stringent that conditions applied to other types of worker. Judging that the system was being abused and exploited both by many workers themselves and by the media and production companies employing them, the government decided in 2003 to tighten the conditions of entitlement to unemployment benefit. This led to massive strikes and protest actions by the Intermittents, and even to the cancellation of the 2003 Avignon theatre festival. The rules were eventually tightened up in 2006, though Intermittents still benefit from an easier entitlement to benefits than most other employees.Dictionnaire Français-Anglais. desalination plant
1) Plants for the extraction of fresh water from saltwater by the removal of salts, usually by distilling.
2) Parts of the world with severe water shortages are looking to desalination plants to solve their problems. Desalination of water is still nearly four times more expensive than obtaining water from conventional sources. However technology is improving and costs are likely to decrease slightly in the future. There is now more interest in building distillation plants beside electric installations so that the waste heat from power generation can be used to drive the desalination process.

reverse osmosis
A method of obtaining pure water from water containing a salt, as in desalination. Pure water and the salt water are separated by a semipermeable membrane and the pressure of the salt water is raised above the osmotic pressure, causing water from the brine to pass through the membrane into the pure water. This process requires a pressure of some 25 atmospheres, which makes it difficult to apply on a large scale. (Source: DICCHE)

rheostatic starter
starter utilizing one or several resistors for obtaining, during starting, stated motor torque characteristics and for limiting the current
NOTE - A rheostatic starter generally consists of three basic parts which may be supplied either as a composite unit or as separate units to be connected at the place of utilization:
– the mechanical switching devices for supplying the stator (generally associated with an overload protective device);
– the resistor(s) inserted in the stator or rotor circuit;
– the mechanical switching devices for cutting out the resistor(s) successively.

NOTE - Un démarreur à résistances est généralement composé de trois parties principales qui peuvent soit être fournies dans le même ensemble, soit être fournies séparément pour être raccordées entre elles sur le lieu d'utilisation:
– les appareils mécaniques de connexion pour alimentation du stator (généralement associés à un dispositif de protection contre les surcharges);
– la ou les résistances insérées dans le circuit du stator ou du rotor;
– les appareils mécaniques de connexion pour l'élimination successive de la ou des résistances.

forest exploitation
Forests have been exploited over the centuries as a source of wood and for obtaining land for agricultural use. The mismanagement of forest lands and forest resources has led to a situation where the forest is now in rapid retreat. The main aspects of the situation are: serious shortages in the supply of industrial wood; the catastrophic erosion and floods accompanying the stripping of forests from mountainous land; the acute shortages of fuel wood in much of the developing world; the spread of desert conditions at an alarming rate in the arid and semi-arid regions of the world; and the many environmental effects of the destruction of tropical rainforests.
