Créée en 1983 par des fabricants de musique électronique pour éliminer les incompatibilités matérielles entre leurs instruments, la norme MIDI (musical instrument digital interface) est une "norme de communication qui définit l’interface assurant l’échange des données numériques et des signaux électriques entre logiciels musicaux, synthétiseurs et autres instruments de musique électronique" (Le Signet). Les synthétiseurs sont reliés à des ordinateurs et à des séquenceurs au moyen d’une interface MIDI. -
