    mathematics - математика; ее предмет составляет квадривиум: арифметика, геометрия, музыка, астрономия; это конкретная наука, а не возможная, ее предмет не включает в себя перемещающиеся, изменчивые вещи опыта. Однако, существуют различия, касающиеся того, чем ее предмет является в действительности: в августинианской традиции числа являются вечными сущностями, возвышающимися над душой, имеющими отношение к мудрости, к созерцанию которой обращены человеческие души; в аристотелевской традиции не существует раздельных вечных сущностей, но неизменные математические сущности возникают как абстракции вещей, постигаемых в опыте. По Фоме Аквинскому (Sum. Theol. I, q. 5, a. 3 ad 4): "Математические предметы не существуют отдельно от бытия, но отделимы друг от друга только в разуме, так как они абстрагированы от движения и материи". Однако, они абстрагируются всего лишь от чувственной материи и этим они отличаются от метафизических предметов; по Фоме (In lib. III de An. lect. 8, 708): "Математические предметы абстрагируются от чувственной материи, а не от интеллектуальной материи, подобно тому, как протяженное количество в мышлении абстрагируется от чувственного качества".     математика; математикой охватывается квадривиум: арифметика, геометрия, музыка, астрономия; одна из частей спекулятивного знания; «математическое знание - неотвлеченное, рассматривает вещи без движения. Оно исследует формы тел без материи и потому без движения. Поскольку же эти формы существуют в материи, они не могут быть отделены от тел» (Боэций. Каким образом Троица есть единый Бог // Боэций. Утешение философией. С. 147). По Фоме Аквинскому, «математические предметы не существуют отдельно от бытия, но отделимы друг от друга только в разуме, так как они абстрагированы от движения и материи» (Thomas Aquinas. Sum. Theol. I, q. 5, a. 3, ad 4). Однако они абстрагируются всего лишь от чувственной материи, и этим они отличаются от метафизических предметов.
