1. Voz procedente del comparativo latino iunior ('más joven'), cuyo uso actual en español se ha revitalizado por influjo del inglés junior. En español debe escribirse con tilde por ser voz llana terminada en consonante distinta de -n o -s. Aunque está notablemente extendida la pronunciación inglesa [yúnior], en español debe decirse [júnior], tal como se escribe, con sonido /j/ inicial, de forma análoga al término eclesiástico junior (pron. [juniór]), que procede del mismo étimo latino. Se opone asénior y hoy se usa con los sentidos siguientes:a) Se pospone al nombre propio de una persona para distinguirla de un pariente de más edad que tiene el mismo nombre, normalmente el padre: " Julio Iglesias júnior edita su primer disco cantado en inglés" ( DNavarra [Esp.] 29.4.99). En español, para distinguir al hijo del padre se usa tradicionalmente la voz hijo, siempre preferible al anglicismo: "La Dama de las Camelias, de Alejandro Dumas hijo" (Cabrujas Día [Ven. 1979]).b) En el ámbito deportivo, '[deportista] de la categoría inmediatamente inferior a la sénior': "Federer, ex campeón júnior de Wimbledon, acabó con el reinado de Pete Sampras" ( FVigo [Esp.] 3.7.01). Como sustantivo, es común en cuanto al género: " La júnior Olga Sánchez y Eva Cruz entraron por delante de Sobrino" ( Abc [Esp.] 28.5.89).
