43 -accompagnare e to accompany-
“To accompany” appartiene a un registro formale e può esprimere anche il concetto di “scortare”: Il premier era accompagnato dai suoi aiutanti e dai dignitari locali, the PM was accompanied by his aides and local dignitaries. Se si accompagna qualcuno con l'intento di proteggerlo, si utilizzano “to walk” (a piedi), “to drive” (in auto) o “to see”: L'ho accompagnata a casa, I walked (o I saw) her home. Infine, se si accompagna qualcuno semplicemente per stare insieme, si ricorre al verbo “to go”: L'ho accompagnato in biblioteca, I went with him to the library. “To come with” viene usato quando ci si offre di accompagnare qualcuno: Ti accompagno, I'll come with you. -
44 -to borrow o to lend?-
Nota d'usoTo borrow significa “prendere a prestito con l'intenzione di restituire”: to borrow a book from the library, prendere a prestito un libro in biblioteca; Can I borrow your camera?, posso prendere a prestito la tua macchina fotografica? To lend vuol dire “prestare qualcosa a qualcuno per un periodo di tempo limitato”: I lent him 100 pounds, gli ho prestato 100 sterline; I lent her my stapler, le ho prestato la mia cucitrice. -
45 -to give o to get?-
Nota d'usoIl verbo regalare corrisponde a “to give” o “to get”, con sfumature di significato leggermente diverse. Esistono inoltre i verbi “to gift” e “to present”. Il primo viene usato per lo più in contesti figurati: Sbagliando quel rigore, Jones ha regalato la coppa all'Arsenal, with that penalty miss Jones gifted Arsenal the cup. “To present”, invece, si riferisce soltanto a regali di una certa entità e viene usato di solito in contesti ufficiali: La signora Thomas ha regalato dieci nuovi computer alla biblioteca, Mrs Thomas presented the library with ten new PCs. -
