δεύτερος, der Zweite; comparativ. zum superlstiv. δεύτατος »der Letzte«, also eigentlich »der Letztere«, d. h. der Letzte von Zweien; δευτερος und δεύτατος hängen mit δύο nicht unmittelbar zusammen, sondern sind zunächst von δεύεσϑαι abzuleiten, δεύτερος der Nachstehende, der (hinter dem Ersten) Zurückbleibende. Lehrreich ist besonders die Redensart οὐδενὸς δεύτερος, Herodot. 1, 23, und Hom. Iliad. 23, 248 ἔπειτα δὲ καὶ τὸν (nämlich τύμβον) Ἀχαιοὶ εὐρύν ϑ' ὑψηλόν τε τιϑήμεναι, οἵ κεν ἐμεῖο δεύτεροι ἐν νήεσσι πολυκλήισι λίπησϑε, Scholl. Aristonic. δεύτεροι: ὕστεροι. καὶ »δεύτατος ἦλϑεν ( Iliad. 19, 51)« ἀντὶ τοῦ ἔσχατος; Scholl. Aristonic. Iliad. 19, 51 ἡ διπλῆ, ὅτι δεύτατος ἀπὸ τοῠ δεύεσϑαι ὁ ἔσχατος· τὸ δὲ δεύεσϑαι ἐνδεῖν ἐστι. Nun hängt aber δεύεσϑαι selbst mit δύο zusammen; es ist mit Guna von der den Begriff der Trennung ausdrückenden Wurzel δυ- oder δFι-gebildet; von dieser Wurzel kommt δύο, das die Sonderung in Zwei bezeichnende Zahlwort, und δεύεσϑαί τινος, von Etwas getrennt sein, es entbehren. Vgl. δίς, διά und das Latein. dis-. Δεύτερος findet sich von Homer an überall, das neutrum auch adverolat, »zweitens«, »zum zweiten Male«; bei Homer öfters in den Formen δεύτερος und δεύτερον; andere Formen nur im 23. Buche der Ilias: δευτέρῳ vs. 265. 750, δεύτεροι vs. 248. 498, δεύτερα vs. 538. In der Odyssee nur δεύτερον, 8, 1619, 354. 18, 24. 19, 65. 22, 69. Homer setzt gerne αὖ, αὖτε, αὖτις hinzu; er gebraucht das Wort vom Raume, von der Zeit und vom Range, welche Kategorien sich aber meistens nicht genau sondern lassen. Entschieden räumlich ist wohl zu fassen Iliad. 23, 498 τότε δὲ γνώσεσϑε ἵππους, οἳ δεύτεροι οἵ τε πάροιϑεν; entschieden von der Zeit Iliad. 5, 855 πρόσϑεν Ἄρης ὠρέξατο – δεύτερος αὖϑ' ὡρμᾶτο Διομήδης; entschieden vom Range Iliad. 23, 538 ἀλλ' ἄγε δή οἱ δῶμεν ἀέϑλιον, ὡς ἐπιεικές, δεύτερ'· ἀτὰρ τὰ πρῶτα φερέσϑω Τυδέος υἱός, τὰ δεύτερα = der zweite Kampfpreis. Vgl. Iliad. 7, 248 δεύτερος αὖτε, Iliad. 3, 191 δεύτερον αὖτε – τὸ τρίτον αὖτε, Odyss. 3, 161 δεύτερον αὖτις, Iliad. 6, 184 πρῶτον μέν – δεύτερον αὖ – τὸ τρίτον αὖ, Iliad. 23, 265 τῷ πρώτῳ· ἀτὰρ αὖ τῷ δευτέρῳ – αὐτὰρ τῷ τριτάτῳ – τῷ δὲ τετάρτῳ – πέμπτῳ δέ. – Folgende: a) der Zeit nach: δευτέρῳ χρόνῳ Pind. Ol. 1, 43; μετ' ἐμὲ δεύτερος, sogleich nach mir, Xen. Cyr. 2, 2, 4. – b) der Oldnung, dem Range nach: οὐδενὸς δεύτερος, keinem nachstehend, Her. 1, 23; Pol. 32, 13, 16; καὶ ὕστερος Plat. Phil. 59 c; δεύτερα ἦν τῶν ὑποκειμένων προςδοκιῶν καὶ τῶν ἐλπίδων, war unter den Erwartungen, blieb hinter den Erwartungen zurück, Dem. 19, 24; ἰσχύϊ δὲ μάχης καὶ στρατοῦ πλήϑει πολὺ δευτέρα ἦν μετὰ τὴν Σκυϑῶν, an Heereszahl stand sie weit der Macht der Scythen nach, Thuc. 2, 97; Her. 1, 31; μετὰ Πᾶνα τὸ δεύτερον ἆϑλον ἀποισῇ Theocr. 1, 3; vgl. ἐμοὶ μὲν μετὰ τὸ πλουτεῖν δεύτερον Alexis Ath.
