The meaning of the word is " sand colour " or " dust " in the Hindoo language, and in 1848 a British Army corps had uniforms dyed in this khaki colour. It was so successful that khaki coloured uniforms were used in the Boer war, Spanish-American war and subsequent World wars. All Army cloths dyed this colour were termed khaki, and these included drills, serges, meltons, whipcords, etc. The colour is very fast and before acceptance all Army fabrics must pass a very severe test (see Khaki colour test, also see Khaki drills) -
